In the seventies, far from being a hippy van the Westfalia was one of the most desirable possessions to be found in suburban driveways and the prices in these ads reflect that. I edited the some of the Volkswagen camper and bus listings together from the Times Colonist Saturday May 8th, 1976. To give you an idea of the costs in today's money I ran some numbers through an inflation calculator in Canadian dollars. $4,400 in 1976 would be $20,073 (1971 Westfalia now in 2021) $6,000 in 1976 = $27,373 (1973 Westfalia) $5,100 in 1976 = $23,267 (1972 Westfalia) $500 in 1976 = $2,281 (1963 VW Bus) $170 in 1976 = $776 (1959 VW Bus) $3,000 in 1976 = $13,686 (1972 VW Bus) $150 in 1976 = $684 (1966 VW Bus)

Yah, most people forget the sixties prices where with fifty cent per gallon gas you could often "fill up" for under $3. My buddies and I would often chip in 50 cents each to put in the tank and it would last us a trip from Chilliwack to Vancouver to bomb around and play chinese fire drill and "how many yellow lights can you hit all evening long. I don't. Great fun! Stan

I think just adding two zeros to the Splitty prices(anyway, not sure about the Bays) would be more fitting. Who would have ever suspected drunk hot rod guys at Barrett Jackson to be the future culprit, lol
