And here we gooooo.... Pretty quiet considering the muffler and crossover pipe is missing... What is not shown here is that earlier in the day Rob S came over and gave me a hand to see if the car would go into gear. YES! The PowerGlide immediately engaged in both Drive and Reverse. Cool! This part is cool too. The old two-door hardtop design with the windows rolled down were always a good looking design. So what is next? I couldn't help myself, and am going to buy that spare 1965 complete engine after all. And we will see what else I come home with from the same person as he does have other parts available... So far the budget has not exceeded $20, but that will change soon...

That was fun, I feel like I was right there. The fan belt set up is very interesting, it does a lot of twists and turns. Thanks for sharing!

Sooo, an opportunity presented itself today... Note the wheels have changed somewhat... My friend Terry has gotten his hands on a '79 Camaro that is destined to become a stock car. It is quite the wreck, but still was equipped with all of the original rally wheels. I am not sure if this is the eventual look that I want: but then they do not look that bad... These are 235/60 R14 tires and are much fatter than the 185/80 R13 that the car should have as stock. The overall diameter is larger so the car is sitting higher too, which I don't really like. The extra fat rubber does seem to clear everything however. Did I mention these are available to me at my favourite price of nothing??? Hmmm. Opinions???

For nothing, absolutely, but for long term, well....I like the look of those rims. I'm with you though, it does sit a tad high, but not terrible. Maybe you could lower it? Oh dear, I said it, lol! Are you bent on nothing but stock? I know you are thinking eventually running thin-line white-walls, but I'm liking the white lettered tires here.

Double post, quoting myself no-less, but I had another (probably pointless) thought overnight.... I think the stance and the wheels are PERFECT for going rallying! They are called "Rally" wheels, no? Just need some slightly knobby tires and some stickers over the rust and away you go, enjoying your car, LOL

I like them way better than stock. Looks great! As Don said, a little mild lowering would fix the height issue, but what about the gearing? Will it be too tall with the larger rolling diameter? I know, build a monster motor for it....

I know, build a monster motor for it.... It's a six cylinder...it's already monster, ha-ha! And the car is even lighter than stock with those rusty holes

...am I the only one who considers date codes when it comes to tires?
Drop some new lower profile 14's on the rally wheels when it comes time to actually put the car on the road.

...am I the only one who considers date codes when it comes to tires? Drop some new lower profile 14's on the rally wheels when it comes time to actually put the car on the road. Couldn't find the date codes on these tires at all. They will be good enough for a low speed test drive to check functional operation of car. Further down the road when the "real" restoration starts, new tires are in the future. Incidentally if a tire is maintained properly, and was a good brand to begin with, it will generally last a long time. My orange bus has 20 year old Michelins on it without any sign of deterioration whatsoever. Neither do the older Michelins on my truck. Have seen lots of cheapo tires on customer cars that are all age cracked after 8-ish years old...

Did you get the last spark plug out and what are the heads aluminum or cast. Have not tried yet. Will eventually once engine has been run a bit longer. Heads are aluminum. Still have not got hands on spare engine yet, so do not have throttle linkage complete yet...

I'm no tyre expert, but I expect that keeping the vehicle stored indoors with minimal UV exposure must prolong their life considerably. I'm not sure what ICBC's stance is on tyre age in the event of a claim though.
I am wondering if I will have any issues with my 12 year old, but otherwise excellent condition bus tyres, when I get my Modified Collector's inspection done later this summer.

Having watched aged out tires that were stored indoors in climate controlled high-dollar collections fail when out on the road (and the subsequent written off classics) I take it pretty serious these days.
...but anyways, back to the regularly scheduled program.

Keep in mind that you drive your cars much harder than I do. I can make my brakes last 25 years too. Change the fluid every few years, the odd service, light on the brake pedal, and it is possible. I will always replace tires once they have cracked, or lost their wet weather grip. I have only ever worn out one set of tires, and those were on my first car, the '70 Beetle. Put around 60,000 miles on those Bridgestone whitewalls that I bought in '86...
