...am I the only one who considers date codes when it comes to tires? Don't worry Dave, no pushing of any limit will be going on... Have you seen the way Russ drives?? Seriously though, Nope, but I knew Russ wasn't planning on using those tires as real runners. He just wants to get on the blacktop to keep the thrill of his new acquisition going...or hear worrying squeaks....ha-ha! I run aged-out tires on my truck(somewhat reluctantly, I like the feel, but probably should change them out) and the other day had a flat- however because of a faulty valve stem, new rather recently...
I'm not sure what ICBC's stance is on tyre age in the event of a claim though. They don't have one because they wouldn't know what you are talking about..."tyres"?? Hmmmm?

Ah, but which country invented the language?

As ripped from the information super-highway: English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark and the Netherlands. So Germans invented the VW, production helped by the English...and apparently they "invented" the English language too I guess that is why the German and English Royalties are so intertwined and Hitler respected the English, until the drugs really kicked in anyway...

Sooo, getting back on track here... I finally managed to get my hands on this little gem... Yes it is a complete engine and transaxle from a parted out 1965 Corvair Monza, just like mine. I have been aware of this for awhile, but was finally able to acquire it just yesterday. And why did I need this??? All the parts that I was missing have been acquired in one go. This engine will provide the critical missing throttle linkage, the crankcase ventilation system, as well as much better condition pulleys. The distributor looks better as well, and possibly the alternator too. And this engine even has a usable muffler as well as the missing crossover pipe. Everything I needed... You can just about make out the "Sears" name on the muffler, so you know that was replaced a very long time ago... Also picked up a much nicer fuel tank at the same time. Mine is looking somewhat needy underneath, so this is a much better solution... Continued...

So this engine was one of those running when parked finds. I knew it turned over without binding before buying it, but you just never know until you have a closer look. First step was to pull out the sparkplugs, but I ran into a bit of difficulty. Upon removal of the sparkplug wire, I was greeted with very densely packed rodent nesting. Ugh! I tried to vacuum it out but was not successful, so some disassembly was required... Once the alternator is removed, you can see this removable plate on the shrouding which covers the oil cooler... Well that is quite unpleasant... You just know what the next step will be... That is number 4 spark plug buried under all that grossness. I had to remove the carbs, linkages, alternator, belt, and adjusters, as well as the front cooling tin to gain access here. But it was necessary... Have never seen a nest that big before on any engine I have touched in the past... And this was after some cleaning too. A full on rodent condo unit... What the fuzzy little buggers used for material, was the sound deadening pad conveniently located on the underside of the decklid. This was mixed in with papers from the car including the registration paperwork. Nice... After mucho vacuuming, you can finally see the cylinders and heads under there. These will need major cleaning with a screwdriver as the fins are well and truly clogged up. Glad I did not try to run it like that. Now I wonder if I should look closer at what might be hiding in the engine in the car... Anyway in the other good news department, the registered letter sent to the last known owner, at the last known address is coming back unopened! That means I will be able to properly register this car in my name soon and it will officially be mine all MINE!!! At least now I can justify the moola I just spent on it, and that feels just fine! Fun times ahead!

I hate rats, did I mention I hate rats? I'm not afraid of them even have caught a few by the tail as a kid. They were very evident on our farm in Chilliwack as it was a hazelnut farm. I know I know I was born and raised on a nut farm. Did I ever mention how much I hate rats? I must have shot hundreds with my little Cooey single shot 22 as a kid because I hate rats. Stan PS I hate rats.

Sooo, even though it was smoking hot today, I did get some work done outside... Thankfully it was under the cover of the carport and was relatively cool... So after removing Stan's lovable rat condo, I reassembled the top of the engine. This went pretty smoothly without any major issue. The carb needle and seat was checked by blowing into the inlet with the carb right side up (flow present), and upside down (no flow present). Both carbs passed this, and that was the only thing checked on them. The points looked in decent shape, but were filed anyway. The gap was closed right up, and would not have started like that at all. Then the bench starter was once again called into action. So was the vintage lawnmower gas tank, and hooking this up revealed a nice leak in the steel line to the fuel pump. The leak was due to a worn spot on the fuel line were it passed through the cooling shroud, and the grommet was missing. Just like your average V-dub... Anyway it was now time to start it up... This was my first attempt at talking in a video, and realized after that the camera mic faces forward. Oh well, you probably didn't want to hear me blab anyway... What was said was basically that the engine started on the first crank and ran quite well. Except the hydraulic lifters would not stop rattling despite building oil pressure immediately. And the fact that the engine has severe blow-by issues... Yes oil happily was shooting up the dipstick tube if the crankcase breather was installed. Even without that, it still over pressurized the crankcase when revved up. And smoked rather spectacularly. My neighbour behind the garage was not impressed when I FILLED her backyard with nice toxic smoke. At least my other neighbour was busy getting questioned by the Police yet again so he did not notice... Anyway this engine is not healthy, but I wasn't going to use it anyway. I have already harvested most of the parts I need off of it for the other car and hopefully we will start that car up once again tomorrow. If it is not too hot, that is...

Well, I did intend to get some work done on the Corvair today. Except where the car is parked, it was in the sunshine most of the day. And given how stinkin hot it is today, pretty much no work happened. Except the only shady spot in the yard is the carport, so I did manage to wash five vehicles in there today. And drank copious amounts of fluids including one ice-cold Coke. Pure Heaven!!!

I think this is where you put what's left up for sale and list it as "running well when pulled". ...well, at least that seems to be the ticket with every used motor I've bought
