OK time to fit the plywood on the floor. Came across this but don't know what it's for. My last 74 didn't have it. It's about 30" behind the drivers seat and 17" out from the drivers side wall. Anyone tell me why I shouldn't cut/grind this off? Stan

I believe it’s a cabinet mount, I can’t remember the year of your van Possibly a rear jump seat if it’s 73

There would have been a sink tower behind the driver's seat in a standard North American issue '74 Westfalia....However, if that is right out there near the middle of the floor it could well be the table leg screw in. The '74 had one of my favourite tables with a pop out leg that screws into the floor. Very useful if you want to have an original table. This photo illustrates the set up, note the table leg, without the screw mount it could easily collapse:

Yes I have the same table and investigated a couple of Westys in recent Victoria meets (pre covid). This mount would be for the sink/water tower so I will keep it meaning cutting a hole in the plywood floor for it. Maybe one day we will want a sink tower but not now. We usually carry a 5 gal water jug with a hand pump in it but mostly get our water for dishes etc. from campground supplied water, heat it up on the picnic table with a portable stove and do the dishes in a plastic tub outside. We reserve the sink tower location for a closet/drawers system for clothes. We have been used to long distance (2 months) excursions so keeping both warm weather and cool weather clothes eats up a lot of space. We rarely cook inside the van and in really inclement weather (like the time a thunderstorm chased us from Medicine Hat to Drydon ON with torrential rain storms every evening) find a motel. Stan

I agree, cooking outside is best when camping, nice to have the extra space for other things
