Just look at this baby! Quite the "variant", isn't it??? Leaves me a bit speechless, actually. Not exactly the "original" car Rob hoped for; but there are not exactly a lot of them to go around... And the adventures have already begun, but Rob can tell you that tale...

FB Marketplace flexing its muscles again. I saw the car and sent the link to Rob. I guess he couldn't resist. "Original" Squares for a low price are pretty scarce, unless the owner has been living under a rock. I think it pretty cool! Maybe after it's back on the road Rob will wanna see what it can do on the logging roads? Nice tires with wide 5 Appliance rims looks like Wonder of it has a LSD or quaife...

I was lucky enough to see this "Baja T3" yesterday. It looked pretty good. Did you get her started Rob?

Well here is the skinny on the on the square back monster. Like Don said he sent me the link for this and I just figured I would at least go see it hoping I could return it to stock but not a chance it has an early split bus front end and rear end with reduction boxes so that was out of my paygrade to get it back to original. After talking with owner his story was pretty cool on his shop 20 or so years ago when this was built and its the only VW he had left and since the wife needed garage space here it is at my place. Its not at all what I was looking for but the price was right and I just figured it would be a fun toy to hit the back roads with along side Don and his Iltis and maybe Ray and his T3 baja. So my plan was to get the motor going before anything else but that soon changed when after trying to figure out why there was no spark I realized the dizzy wasnt turning and only does occasionally, I found today that it does turn but stops at certain points while spinning hahaha so out it comes to figure out why...broken drive gear? broken/worn dizzy gear or I dont know!!! But I did get the interior out today to clean and inspect, it looks just fine for what it's going to be used for. Tommorrow out comes the engine and replace with another one until I get to crack the case. I will run this idea by you mechanics out there...can the end play be so bad that the dizzy gear and drive gear not engage with each other? ? More to come

I think the end play would have to be spectacularly bad for the gear not to engage at all. Probably a big chew out of one section of the brass drive gear...

If the end play is *that* bad, you'll be able to pull the rear pulley out and push it back in for a satisfying "thunk" each way...
I haven't stripped the 1600dp I pulled out of the '58 yet. Running, has been overheated once. Still pushed the '58 to 70mph before I pulled it, but that's down from wrapping the needle before I overheated it. If you need a motor, we can probably make a deal.

If I recall it was the thing to do to install those early split bus reduction boxes in off-road bugs for the added torque and clearance. It sounds like you're ready for the Island back roads as soon as you install the "new" engine. Congratulations Rob!

Okay I have discovered the problem with the dizzy not turning. I have taken out the engine so I can do a rebuild but when I took off the pulley I found the set pin had sheered off so when I was turned the motor with the generator belt and watching the pulley turn in fact the engine wasn't turning hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha. I think in the future I will always turn engines with the center nut 😁 and not rely on pulleys and belt's

You have a backup in PA if things go south. And don’t worry about the budget for that one, friends help friends

I have never seen one of those keys shear. Interesting... Sucky thing is, I don't think you can replace that key without splitting the case...

Hey Russ it's not the key on the crank if that's what you're thinking it's the set pin on the belt pulley. It keeps the pulley in place on the fan. I'll send you a picture tomorrow.

Ok. I have not had one of those off on a type 3 yet, so am not familiar with that component... Did you go to the Comox show???
