Hey thanks for posting pictures Russ!! So Ive wanted to build a NOS enginge for awhile now so over the last couple months Ive been collecting some goodies. I have a set of Kolbenschmidt pistons & cylinders, a nos Brazillian made crankshaft, 2 sets of rod bearings, Mahle (new) and nos Metal Leve, an Engle W100 cam, new but looking for old lifters, Kolbenschmidt main bearings but I have a line on OE VW ones, and a special distributor with built in electronic ignition thanks to Mr Dave, I really hope it will work in a type 3 engine because pertronix wont fit in T 3 dizzys. I am missing a few other items so I thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone has a stash I could buy, I need a set of cam bearings, con rod bushings, push rods and tubes but Im thinking new will do for those, exhaust and intake valves, valve guides, I think thats it hahaha. Im building this for two reasons, one just to build a NOS engine for fun and experience, and for the type 3 wagon that will appear one day...yes Im still looking. Thanks in advance if anyone has parts for me. hhhooo should be a kickass project!!!

Interesting distributor. Do you have the ignition module and harness to go with it? Looks like the style from a 1.9L Vanagon. The Pertronix can be modified to work with the Type 3 fuel injection distributor. Reagh has one in his, and it seems to do the job.

It looks like the module is inside the dizzy already if we are talking about the same thing and I was going to hook it up just like a pertronix straight to the coil. No harness but it looks like I can make one easy enough. If this doesnt work with my engine I will get you to show me how to modify one to fit pertronix

Some more information for you... These factory type distributors use something called a hall-effect switch to act in place of the ignition points. This is not the same way as the Pertronix and Compufire work, as both of those systems work on magnetism and are self contained inside the distributor. The factory hall-effect switches use a separate remote module as shown in the diagram. This picture is similar to the type used in early MK 2 Golfs and Jettas with CIS injection. In these early systems, the ignition module is completely independent of any aspect of the fueling system, and the timing is still controlled via the weights and vacuum canister. Later system integrated the ignition timing functions into the car's control module which include fueling as well. I am curious what that distributor you have was actually listed to fit. I assume it has the drive dog for a flat four, but that vacuum canister is not the same type as used on the 1.9 L Vanagons as I initially thought. Electronic ignition WAS used on certain Bay-windows destined for the California market, but I have never seen one. I have in fact seen one air-cooled Vanagon that did have a distributor like that in it. The module for it looked like that picture above... To make the one you have work, you will need to get the module, correct coil, and you really need that specific harness. The connectors are quite specific to the distributor and module. Incidentally the hall-effect type switches require an input current from the remote ignition module to work, and the end result is a square wave form. I am not going to explain how it works exactly because everyone would be fast asleep by the end of the first paragraph...
