Finally in hand...literally! But should they be built? This a spitting image of Laurie's (now Claire's) Westy This one unexpectedly came with paint, bonus! Even though it says no painting necessary

You're supposed to get 2 of each...one to build, one to hoard...

That was the whole idea, although it depends on how easy it is to transfer parts between them. The question is, are you going to build either of yours???

Pffft...Taylor sends ME cars she thinks I might want to buy! Her 30th birthday, a few months after we started dating? "Happy Birthday Babe! I bought me a car!" (The red '68 Beetle) On some 'month anniversary' (you know, that women celebrate) "Guess what babe?! I bought me a car!" (Falcon) I think(?) our 1 year anniversary? "Happy Anniversary Babe! I bought me a car!" (Bricklin) ...there was also the Gold Parts Beetle I bought. And a '71 Super Beetle which was also on some date important to Tay. She's definitely a keeper, but I had to stop...couldn't afford it

Well here we gooooo... I couldn't contain myself any longer. Time to open that first box of fun. Parts all laid out. It has been a VERY long time since I have cracked open a new model kit. I have not even thought of building one for years, but hey, it is an orange BAY window bus! This is a brand new tooling and everything looks very nice. Absolutely no flashing at all on the new molds. This is only considered a "snap-together" kit, but it is very nicely detailed. Even comes with two sets of decals; one set sticker type, the other set proper water-slide decals. Nice! Not many chrome parts, but then there isn't much chrome on a late bay... Of course I opened the Westfalia version as well. In this shot I have already mixed and matched the parts needed to build a L20B Brilliant Orange Westfalia (or Restfalia) in my case. And did you notice the Westfalia kit included the standard bus roof as well? You know what that means... The beige bus can be built into a stock passenger bus, as there will be enough parts to do it. So this one will be the practice run. I will build it strait out of the box just for fun. In reality this will not take very long at all... How far to go with my Restfalia version is another thing though. How accurate do I want to make the replica. If I build it without paint or modifications it will still look pretty decent. Or do I want an exact replica of "my" beloved campervan. Hmmm, gonna have to think about that... Revell's instruction book (and it is a book) is probably the nicest one I have ever seen in a model kit. Mind you given what these kits cost, it should be nice... So here is something to ponder. I don't think I have ever mentioned it here that I once regularly built model kits. Not surprisingly my early efforts were the usual glue-bombs, but I was getting better near the end of my kit building days. Dad always told me that once I started building real cars, I wouldn't do models anymore. Damn, he was right... Here is the last model I ever built... This one was not significant for what it was, but where it was built. On my second trip to visit the in-laws in Taiwan, I visited a hobby shop while in the capital of Taipei. This Mark 3 Golf was the only VW of any description they had, so I bought it as well as the Tamiya spray paint and some glue. I had a plan, as later in the trip we were going to spend some time with Rebecca's parents at their house in the city of Hua-Lien. This place was roughly equivalent to Parksville/Qualicum as a retirement community, and there was pretty much NOTHING to do there for younger people. Not speaking the language didn't exactly help either. So this was why I bought the model and happily built it while staying there. The final details were finished off once the trip was over as I did not want to buy any extra paint that I would not be able to take back home with me. My father-in-law was amused by all this... Anyway I repeated this the next trip and bought a model of a Mitsubishi Delica. Then I never actually built that one there as I ended up doing a bunch of plumbing on the house instead. Yes they have an equivalent to Home Depot over there... Also worked on Rebecca's Dad's 1993 Ford Festiva sedan, now a VERY old car by Taiwan standards. Only had 17,000 km on it back then... Anyway I will do a quicky build on the passenger bus first, then see how far I want to go with the camper version. And for Tom, you will be happy to know this model represents a 1973 body... For Stan, it is close enough to your '74. I think I might just post up some pics of other models I built in the past on the "other hobbies" thread here somewhere on this site. My Dad built them back in the day to. It will probably not surprise you to know that the majority of them have still survived as well...
