Turn signals on the '71 westie are not working . Fuse is fine , the 4 outside lights work when I pull on the emergency flasher and the high/low headlights switch is good. I've traced the wires under the dash and that all seems ok. I pulled the switch off the steering column but didn't want to pry too deep for fear of causing more problems. Any ideas on what to try - hopefully I can avoid having to buy a turn signal switch as they're not cheap and there's no guarantee that's the problem.
I have been using hand signals when driving but I'm not sure how many drivers on the road know about them.

The early bay signal switches are notorious for wires coming loose inside the switch itself. Fortunately the switch can be disassembled pretty easily and re-soldered if that is what your problem turns out to be... I would definitely recommend fixing the original switch before buying a new one of likely questionable quality...

Thanks - when I get back to it , I take the switch out, clear off the kitchen table and see what I can find .

Got the turn signals working. I was going to pull off the signal switch and dig in to see what I could find ,but I thought I'd first move the steering column out of the way and try to get a better look at the wiring behind the dash. That's where the problem was - a wire had some how disconnected. Funny how fixing a simple little thing like that becomes the highlight of your day.

Yes congratulations. I still have stuff to do in that rats nest behind my dash. Getting tired of working upside down and cramped into positions those ladies that do yoga can only dream of accomplishing. The PO left a giant base from some dvd system with what seems like hundreds of different wires snaking out in every conceivable direction. Since the face plate is long gone, there's no point in trying to save anything to do with it. Stan
