After a two year absence due to you know what, this swap meet is back and is this Sunday (June 12). See the link below for more info... nanaimo.vccc.com/SwapMeet2022.htmAs always, this is not a VW specific swap meet, but has everything for mostly vintage cars/hot rods. Despite this I have managed to find cool VW stuff every year and suspect this will not be different. All tables have been sold out for some time, and I expect it is going to be busy. I know myself, Don, and Brian are making the trek, and I am sure we will not be the only ones... See you there...

So today was the big day. Finally after a two year absence, the swap meet in Nanoose was back in action. Brian, Don, and myself piled into Don's wife's Volvo wagon to hopefully haul home a ton of goodies. With Don's driving skills, we arrived there in what seemed like a few minutes in time for the 8:00 am opening. And what did we find once inside??? I pretty much immediately stumbled over something special. Just another old radio with some funky homemade speaker housing. Except have another look... That is a genuine Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM/Shortwave radio from 1965-66 with what appears to be an early Type 3 faceplate. Yes it is a little tired, but seems all there except for some metal brackets that attach the separate power unit to the radio body. Does it work? Unlikely, but at only $20 for this rare part I am not going to complain. This model was designed to fit many cars and can run on both 6 or 12 volts, and positive or negative ground. I will clean it up some time later and try it out... And given I already have a couple of Blaupunkt Beetle faceplates in stock, I could even possibly install this in my '66 Beetle when it gets the 12 volt conversion. Hmmm.... Continued...

Next up is what could be described as a group buy. Reagh and I spotted a box crammed full of VW books and repair manuals of various descriptions. At $20 per book I was going to make my selection but there was LOTS of good stuff in there... Reagh suggested to offer a price for the whole box and the seller agreed to $80 which was more than fair. So we paid $40 each, picked our favourites, and the rest will be future donated door prizes at our next show (still in the works...) I am not familiar with the Nine Lives Later book, but it does contain LOTS of period pictures I have never seen before, so that is cool. I don't have the Haynes manual shown, and I also grabbed a hardcover green Bentley we are familiar with. There were several more of these in the stash along with many of those "Idiot" manuals. And lots of owner's manuals and miscellaneous books as well. A great score! Reagh ended up finding a nice set of snowflake tail light assemblies, as well as a few other items. I spotted a quite nice aftermarket VW steering wheel (suitable for a buggy) in great shape for only $10. It was not hard to convince Brian he needed it and he agreed. He also bought an old aluminum roof rack in nice shape for quite cheap, and a first aid cabinet for his shop wall. Don sniffed out some nice Snap-On tools, woodworking tools, and a neat old car club badge (Sports Car Club Canada). And a toy VW bus of course. HighTopRob found a cool badge as well which was neat. He also found an original Nanaimo VW Club sticker which was kind of funny. Also spotted was Peter (of split window Beetle fame), and Clay was spotted and had found some Oldsmobile stuff. If anyone has a specific 30th anniversary "Idiot" manual, he would like one for his collection as well. Continued...

Meanwhile I was looking for Corvair stuff and found..... Absolutely nothing at all. In 2019 there were a lot of Corvair toys for sale, and I was ready to buy one this time. Except the toy selection this year was poor in terms of what I like. If you liked later HotWheels, Greenlights, and things like that, then there were mountains of them available. I prefer 1960's era stuff and there was very little this year. Did manage to get some contact info for Corvair literature which is nice. In previous years, there is one vendor from Vancouver who always has cool stuff and I always find something to buy from him. He has lots of different car emblems, but sadly no Corvair versions. I thought I might leave empty handed, but then I spotted it! Why would I want a crusty-ish Dueck badge??? See those two vacant holes on the back of my Corvair? That is were the missing dealer badge once was... And that is what actually was meant to be there. When I sent away for this car's history, it was sold new at Deuck GM in Vancouver. This is exactly the type of badge the car had on it when new... Yes maybe it is a little thing, like putting some new paint on the Titanic, but it did make me happy to "complete" the car. Now I just need to find some tailights and a front emblem, and the car will be 100% complete. Hope to get some more time to spend on this car later this summer... Anyway the swap meet was a success as far as I was concerned, and will be back again next year...
