Like pretty much everyone else, after a long absence the Vintage Meet was once again put on by Cascade Kombis. I decided to help out this year by volunteering, since Volktales had the decision made for him that his niece's wedding was more important(lol, better luck next year ). Anyhow, since Volktales is usually in charge of picture taking and comments, y'all are gonna have to put up with my hasty pics and words. The event was held at the same Shoreline Community College, but in a different area. It turned out to be just fine. The swap wasn't quite as nice in my opinion, but sobeit, it still went ahead. Perhaps not as many vendors, but still some great stuff and perhaps even some deals? The weather was perfect in lots of ways with not too much sun and some cool weather in the morning, as seems to be the usual for that location/event. But first one has to drive there, and of course if one can, attend the Burger Meat as it is dubbed(see what I did there?) at the U District's BurgerMaster the night before. Getting down has always been not too bad, but the wait was close to 2 hours at around 10:30am Friday morning. First one has to peruse the adjacent Safeway parking lot as cars come and go more readily there... Some names you might be familiar with from the mainland and members of the Hawaiian Club. Being invite only and so exclusive, I am not too sure if I am even allowed to breathe their name. A very nice Squareback. Recent owner wasn't too sure of the colour name, but I liked it, even with the wide whites. Early shade-getters Name and year? Note plate.. Nice Beetle with early Lemmerz Porsche rims I think. Note the flat, smoked headlight glass. Not too sure how that would withstand a rock chip. Maybe it was plexi and it would be better? Don't know. Russ Wulf's Lowlight Ghia. Other than it being a tad low for me, I love the old school pale yellow with black roof combo. Never got a chance to talk with RW, but he seems to pop up a lot of FB samba. He might even be in the pic.

Patina or shiny, Bus or Bug, take your pic, everything goes. Jen's "sisterbug" Looking into the Hawaiian enclave I hope this on air. I think the muffler is touching I quite liked most things about this Beetle. I think it was the beefy-looking Lemmerz-like wheels. Are they on spacers? And who do we have here(note the license plate). Turns out is Jake from Victoria driving his freshly completed 59 complete with proper long spoon latches. Jake and Taylor drove down together I guess electing to leave Taylor's VWs at home. Jake should be commended as he has has done a great job on this Bus, being that it was bought as a purple and black project Bus. Jake's dad(Tim I think, or is that Tom(sorry if I am getting that wrong)) knew of this Bus in a mainland friend's possession for some time and managed to get it bought. This was its first major run, and I think Jake was somewhat relieved to be there. I am sure there was help along the way, but Jake learned a lot getting this Kombi back on the road, and it looks as though he learned well too! I am sure dad had a hand in keeping Jake at it, but they all turned out a fine product. Jake said it will be his last shiny paint project due to all the sanding. We'll see about that. Congrats to all involved. Now here is something very special to me that I have never seen in person before. Can anyone tell me what it is? If you said Binz Double Cab, you would be correct! Double Cabs or DoppelKabine or DoKa's(later called that) were not know before a Dutch florist had the coachbuilder Binz turn a Single Cab into one so the Dutch company could get 5 guys and their tulips to market, or one such story goes. Note the door handle location for the rear passengers...yes, "suicide". Very cool! Pressed bumpers and nice paint in Dove Blue Note the Single Cab seam below the rear side window

Yes I was very disappointed I was unable to attend this year. I was told I had to go to my niece's wedding or else! Weren't any VWs at the wedding, either. Given the wedding venue was down a dirt road, I wasn't taking any of my VWs to the wedding! Looks like there were some new cars to see at the show and sorry I missed it! Hanging out with our hosts of Steve and Bonnie in Seattle was always a blast and I really missed that as well. Usually some drinking involved...

I also attended the Seattle show and got the coveted green shirt ! Didn't see you there Brett, but there were a lot of Schtaff shirts milling about. I got main gate duty from 10:30-12:30, what duty did you pull? Unfortunately no after-event party...from what Steve and I knew about anyway.

While I was checking out the Binz, this Bus rolls up and immediately guys were trying to talk with the driver as soon as he stepped out. Well, I must admit I wasn't paying too much attention to the Bus nor the driver, but just as I was about to turn away, the driver says, "Hey Don, how's it going?". I probably looked like deer in the headlights for a second until I realized it was none other than Johnny Main from Cobble Hill in his new Duncan "find". Apparently he has know about the Bus for quite some time, but only lately did the opportunity to purchase come up. I think Johnny's ear got talked off that night, and probably the next day too. "Retro", but not, pinstriping And here is the man himself, deep in conversation Nice Notch with slot mags Here is Jake's Dad Tom's Bus You all know the unmistakable dash Talked with this couple and they had just got back from a 4500 miles round trip and were all smiles. It still runs a T4 engine Some old Bugs This Split was the oldest of them all But what do we have here? Yup, you got it, a Supercharger! I don't think the tire/rim "package" would stand up to too much supercharger action though. Cool trim rings. Here is quite a different way to get some power out of your VW's flat four...TURBO! Ahhhh, here we go, this Splitty Double Cab is more my speed I got the feeling the patina crowd wasn't as huge this year, but it was there Getting to be a few cars!

Russ Wulf's clean engine bay Another DC, and I hope it is on air bags. The muffler tip was touching the ground. Slammed Bug with bandaids on its fender Johnny's 23 window showing its unusual lines One way to advertise This what you missed Russ. It doesn't look like much, but not a word of a lie, it ranked in the top 5 of the burgers I have eaten in my life. The special "tropic" milkshake upgrade was pretty darn tasty too! How about them wide whites? Owners didn't know the name of the colour though. How could you not know that when you okay the colour to get your Bug repainted in?? German/Cal Look? Showing its age a bit, but I like it More Safeway parking lot goodness And so concludes your BurgerMaster Voyeuristic journey.

If that burger was as good as you say it was, you should have chowed down on at least two of them!!!

If that burger was as good as you say it was, you should have chowed down on at least two of them!!! Yes, I guess I should have eaten one in your honour.
Starting in the parking lot. Only going from the license plate, a 1960 Euro(semaphores), but what is up with the tail pipes? Note the sticker on the rear passenger window and the tail pipes Like the wide whites Russ? I certainly like the colour. Tail punched Later Ghia A well-travelled Bus...all the way from Gander NFLD Quite the story. Could have been yours that day too Now is that a 411 or 412? Sticker kinda spoils the look of this Bug IMO Nothing stock about this guy's set up So many Beetles, too little time Here is something you don't see every day, a Type 147 Fridolin! In Swiss Post paint colours I think. Some interesting stickers Not stock power One of my favourite VW's ever....maybe not in this paint though Ghias and Type 3's And Bays I think this a Brazilian Bus(note the strange front bumper) and it's from BC. Pretty sure it won an award.. Major visor with a welded adjuster Mike Schmitt's nice daily Square Split Bus line up A Hawaiian Buggy
