You think your 2 litre flat four is big? Uh, no.....
Built by Wartsila-Sulzer, this diesel powers the largest ships in the world. Each cylinder displaces 1820 litres, (14 of them) with a 960mm bore and 2500mm stroke. How about a maximum of 108,920 Horsepower at a whopping 108 rpm! That doesn't sound like much but everyone knows diesels are all about torque. How does 5,608,310 ft/lbs grab you??? Before you go thinking about repowering your bus, consider the crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons!

Looks familiar.... We had big old slow speed diesels on the old Sea Princess / Victoria. They were build in the 60's and I remember one of the engineers showing me the sections of the block moving against each other as the engine ran They were a little worn by the time I got to work on this ship in the mid nineties. The later ships ran Warstila high pressure common rail diesel generators, that powered Cegelec or Siemens electric motors. Due to the problems with the numerous electronic sensors and the high pressure fuel system, these engines became known as common fail, due to their tendency to shut themselves down or fail to start...

Very cool Russ........ lets buy one and share the cost , each of us could have a more manageable one cylinder diesel engine for our chosen vw , our bug or bus or ghia would only have to support about 7% of the original weight of the engine and the torque would be a more manageable 400,000ish ft/lb..........anyone?

Just revisiting the old thread! 😎 Why? Are you gonna make the old Bug go a bit faster??? Or did you get a great deal on a slightly used container ship???
