As some of you know, a fast growing tumour forced us to to send our crazy dog's energy, Lucy, off to the universe late last year. It quickly became apparent that our regular Holland Creek trail walk just made us too sad to do alone. Walking neighbours' dogs did not only provide our neighbours a service, but helped us out immensely, both activity-wise and as a substitute dog connection while making the grind of the stairs more palatable. After a little over a month of being personally dog-less, my wife still couldn't take not having a pooch to cuddle with after her stressful days at her work. Being that we live in a small house with three cats we needed to find a cat-friendly dog. We have also always liked the temperament of Cattle Dogs we have met on the trail and elsewhere. So the hunt began to find a young Cattle Dog. We thought we had found a middle aged candidate at the SPCA, but she was snapped up before we could get in touch. Next option was to find a puppy. It was Kijiji to the rescue and I found a farm that had had a litter wanting to one day replace their aging male and younger female dogs. The dad is 12 years old and pretty arthritic, but managed to sire some beautiful pups with the younger mum and the litter was born in October. The family paid close attention to the temperament of the pups and it seemed like one would be a "more cuddly" fit for our household. So, we decided to leave her at home until she was around 10-11 weeks. That time was last week and a plan was made to go get the new pup. One thing I have yet to mention is that the family lives just outside of Enderby. So it was quite the drive(not in comparison to miles Dave puts on). I managed to go up and back in a couple of days. The Coquihalla cooperated for the most part with the worst being Saturday with a fair bit of snow on the way up and semis all over the place having trouble or putting chains on...or losing them as they littered the road after the summit. But I made it and even managed to pick up some much needed FREE Saab parts on the way home. I am happy to so far report things are working out...but I am getting nothing done other than early puppy training and exercise, LOL!
Little Ryn at her home farm on Saturday afternoon. The name Ryn is from my mum's name, Kathryn, in her honour after her passing last March. She would have loved this pup being that we had a Border Collie/Blue Heeler at home when I was in my 20's.
Our first short walk with a neighbour dog...too fun for both dogs, and a lot of running in rubber boots for me, lol!
After the walk
The toys are accumulating and being recycled from when Lucy was a puppy...
