lean idle circuit and or plugged jet, causing to run hotter, causing run on. when back together check for vacuum leaks.

When calculating deck hight do you account for the type four sealing washers ?

Not trying to be a pain but back fires through carb or exhaust is it one of those fuel injected things did premium fuel cure the run on issue. Stude 96mm A&A 52 split Backfires trying to start - run on when shut down New exhaust no leaks

It back fires through the exhaust. Just measured deck hight and have loads of room making my compression low so i will not use the washers , mating the heads to cylinder tops . I think i can get in into the right compression range this way
Bus ins not fuel injected Thank for all thoughts on this !

15 years on this build not bad do you have it apart if so was there lots of carbon on the pistons did you do the rod bearing 15 years ago just asking have you checked the end play yet I am curious it is nice to sit on the computer and have someone else do the work what did the plugs look like white brown or black.

its been some time since i put one together, sealing washers? got a pic. do you mean barrel spacers. deck height is measured with the cylinder sightly torqued to the block, straight edge across the cylinder then feeler gauge down to the top of the piston @ tdc using no barrel spacers. that measurement will tell you what size spacers to use.

Ha i have found out that i have too much clearance from cylinder to head … (due to type 4 Sealing shims ) Removing them should increase my compression ratio Thanks all

Here is something to keep in mind. Original factory type heads used those "sealing washers" between the tops of the barrels and the heads. These were not used on type 1 based engines. Aftermarket heads (the common AMC brand) had these "washers" cast in as part of the head itself. The new heads came with instructions to not use the old style sealing washers with the new heads or your compression would be too low. Backfiring through the exhaust was often lean mixture related, or a slight exhaust leak...

Thanks for your input on this . I believe i am onto a better running motor !. I also confirmed the sealing washers were not used with later piston sets and heads.
And i wondered why i could only get 60 km up over the Malahat! Thanks all for your input ,I did this over 15 years ago , I'm not finding anything parts wise that need replacement yet except gaskets and pushrod tubes and seals . Endplay is non existent! But the exhaust studs were loose from the backfiring . I have the head out and have removed number 3 exhaust valve and will polish it up a bit seams to be a little leaky after a test

Well 72 deck hight.
I was shooting for between 40-60 but I guess it’s better than 102 with the washer .
cant post pictures ….. says too big

Looks like you just need to bolt on some exhaust and be ready for action...
