Hi all Wow over twenty years now i didn’t know to much about rebuilding motors or was too afraid to dig in . That said when i got my bus i had a problem with the 1700 Loosing a piston . I picked up a motor in Victoria and its what is in the bus right now. My question to get advice on is : Currently the motor is hard to get the timing write , i suspect end play problems .
Having the two motors would you rebuild the 1700 or 1800 ? Thanks

the 1800 had the largest valves. rebuild it with flat top pistons.

Thx for the help When i got the motor i put a new set on it figuring that was all i had to do …. Little did i know ! They are flat top and i got the heads done at johns bug shop in Surrey . So other than gasket s and getting new bearings and cases bored should be good .
Don’t know if i should tempt the gods with me doing a second build …… ha ha

This number is registered to a 1973 1700?
Cb code is 73 1700 I put 1900 cylinders on it and they slipped right in with out work on the heads . So i have two motor cases with CB code and will do more research .

How does end play affect timing?

If the crankshaft moves back and forward your distributor drive also moves and it makes it hard to get precise timing . I have found it can be out 2-4 degrees .

I doubt that would make any difference.

In situations where the endplay is very excessive, this does potentially affect the timing, as the brass distributor drive gear shifts back and forth with the crank. You can see this movement if you remove the distributor and push and pull on the crankshaft and watch the distributor drive rotate. If your endplay is that bad, then you have more problems then just erratic timing...

I have removed the heads and will do a leak down test . The bottom end looks good so far , because its a automatic there is no load on the crank like in a standard transmission. So i will test the end play and look further into the heads .

You added 200cc to the displacement that is a lot now your motor has run on probably due to high compression and carbon build up did you increase you combustion chamber with shims when you did it. Leak down isn't that done with the heads on. What exactly is your motor issue.

I did add shims to the barrels but now want to double check everything . I think i have a valve problem because of backfiring some times I will check the heads when off by adding fluid and see if they leak. Might have to lap a few valves to make them happy Leak down could be done assembled as well but i like visual ! This is a long overdue check at my work from 15 years ago !
I think i need to have a club meeting again here at the shop ! Ha ha
