Because this is a car based website, we all know all about preventative maintenance, don't we. None of us would ever skip an oil change or tune up, would we? Well there are others out there that don't see it that way...
MMM, doesn't that look tasty? That nasty blob is in fact a fuel filter. As you can see it is almost to the point of rusting through it has been on there so long. The vehicle in question was a 15 year old Nissan that had never received a tune up, ever, despite close to 250,000 km on the odo. The car was in for a lack of performance. Given that the fuel inside the filter looked as bad as the outside, the poor performance was not surprising. The sparkplugs were worn down to little nubs as well and all of them were real fun to remove. On this V6, the plugs fit down in deep "wells" which had happily filled up with a combination of dirt, corrosion, and rat poops. Nice. Don't treat your VW this way, please....

Here is another one...
This is what was found under the valve cover of a car in the shop today. Not a regular customer, and brought the car in saying it makes funny noises on startup. The noise was the timing chains slapping around until the oil pressure built up. When your oil is full of sludge like that, then noise should not be surprising... I don't know if the owner just bought it, and who is to blame for lack of maintenance, but I can tell you this was not some rusty old golf, but a newish high performance Audi which otherwise looked shiny and nice. Go figure...
