Ok so I am currently sick at home today, so had time to scan some more vintage pictures. Today we will travel 26 years into the past to the second Great Canadian show I ever attended. Ah, the '80's, big hair, spandex, and some really dated styles in the VW community... Sit back and enjoy...
First up, an oval ragtop done up in the popular style of the day. Frank will love the colours, while Tony will drool over those sweet white window seals... Darren will like the ragtop and semaphores, no doubt. And check out the glowing white running board rubber!
This '64 shows how it was done. Keep in mind that back in '89 I had just bought my first '66 Beetle (Kevin Brown's old car). It looked very similar to this except the rims were gold instead of body colour. Had I done anything with that car right away, it WAS my intention to paint the rims body colour like the Beetle above. Can you imagine that?
This Pearl White '65 was relatively stock-ish. I liked the pop-outs and rain deflector, but hated the Cal-look window rubber and those stupid eyebrows!
I think this was a '59. Black is not my favourite VW colour, but looks decent with a red interior. Those whitewalls need to be much fatter however...
You would have to have some excellent body work skills, to make a black panel look smooth. This one is a fairly early example too, and today would likely be returned to a factory colour.
Now who wouldn't want that investment (wait, VW) in their garage today. That is a nice 21 window with Safari's of course.
I quite liked this '62 ragtop. A good example of a car that needs its wheels painted the proper original two-tone to look even better. This was still my favourite car that year.
The original interior looked great. The early big window cars have my favourite dashboard design of them all.
This '56 was one of a couple of cars that had been featured in Hot VW's at the time and were up from the States. You will note the usual roof rack full of useless crap. But I guess if you have to lug all that stuff to a show, then you have to put it somewhere, don't you?
Once again I don't know why I took a picture of this. I think these where Wizard Roadsters, but I could be wrong... Check out the wide rim on the convertible in the background! And once again that appears to be my friend Pat's old '55 red and white Beetle in the background.
This early '60's Beetle shows a lot of the flash associated with the resto-mod crowd at the time. Imagine that white fender beading was once popular...
Another magazine feature car, this low light Ghia looked great, other than the usual junk on the roof. I think this one was up from the States too. Another pricey bus in the background...
I liked this converted camper. Don probably knows which conversion it is. Those painted hubcaps look good in this application.
This stock oval looks nice with it's correctly painted rims. The others to either side feature paint schemes and rims common to the era.
Is that turbo big enough for you Frank??? Looks well used too...
I was immediately drawn to this Beryl Green '63. It turned out not to be that original however...
This is the engine from the above car. There is one thing that dates this as an '80's engine compartment immediately... Check out the clear distributor cap. Must have been cool to watch these in action at night...
Another splitty, this time a nice 13 window Deluxe from Washington. Those tires and trim rings work well on this bus. Interesting rack if you like that sort of thing...
One for Tony. About the same year and colour of his. Looks like Porsche rims too.
I quite liked this very stock 11 window Kombi. Looks like a lot of effort went into this bus.
Another Java Green '67 Beetle, but not the same one from the 1998 show. You can see that the weather was rather miserable that year.
I really don't think I could look at that pinky Beetle without barfing today. Hard to believe this was once thought of as cool. The blue Beetle in the foreground still looks fine however. You can never go wrong with an original VW colour...
And finally this lime green 23 window Deluxe with matching trailer. I happily walked by this without even looking, but my friend Lynda fell in love with it. She insisted I take this picture and wasn't amused when I told her to not touch the door handle! Too bad I didn't try to get my hands on a 23 window back in '89.. All things were relative, and probably couldn't have afforded it back then either... Hope you all enjoyed the latest photos...
