Ok, yesterday it was time for a day trip down island to Victoria... Why? The official reason was to go see my kid play hockey at a tournament (he was already down there with Rebecca). The unofficial reason was a trip to my favourite bakery... I asked Don if he wanted to go and unsurprisingly another unofficial reason presented itself. It seems someone (Brent) tipped Don off about a Type 3 that might be available for viewing... But first things first...
Lucy the dog came with us and needed a "break". Don knew this place in Mill Bay and it was quite interesting.. Don't know the original use for this giant ancient looking "pipe" thing. I kind of like "urban exploring".
This was a very picturesque place beside the river. Then I noticed the ground covered with condom wrappers... Ewww!
On the way back from the Esquimalt Bake Shop, fully loaded with fattening goodies, I spotted a bus on a side street. A moldering '71...
And a short distance away, a late model Riviera from California. I have never seen the Riviera sticker like this before...
And here is the Type 3 we came to see. A 1969 model, it features the earlier nicer bumpers and shorter hood. A bit slimy however...
Car was running when parked here. Has been off the road since 2008.
Straight but front fenders are rotted like all Type 3's.
Nothing was missing however, AND it includes original rust free front fenders in the deal. Three different repair manuals, new TMI seat covers, and a pile of spare electronic parts were also included. Did I mention this car features its factory fuel injection? First impressions of the body were not great, but the more we looked, the more we found to like. The odometer says 34,000 miles, and there is a good chance this is genuine too! An oil change sticker on the door reads 28,000 miles, and the car had previously been in covered storage for years. It is pretty hard for me to resist when confronted with these details, so despite not previously showing any interest in Type 3's, I couldn't leave it behind, could I? Another VW rescue is in the works...
Although the dash pad is cracked beyond repair, other then the instruments bezels that are rusty, the rest of the interior is quite presentable. The headliner is mint. Most of the smaller damaged items, I already have in stock or know people who do...
Saw this on the way back. Not a VW obviously, but a cool 1967 Beaumont station wagon. Owner stated it was one of less then 300 built for the Canadian market. His Dad was the original owner, and he will NEVER sell it. Very nice it was too... Overall an interesting day...

I still like notchbacks better, but oh well. I do like that colour. L 50B Diamond Blue. Black leatherette interior. And at least it is not an automatic! I wonder what a Type 3 would look like with slot mags???

My favourite type of Type 3! Very nice Russ. Will it be stored inside and where does it fall in the restoration order? You'll have to arrange a viewing visit when you get it home!
I remember seeing the Esquimalt bus when I was down there with the ship in refit last year. It looked pretty rough.

Not sure yet, but the first job is a damn good cleaning to see exactly how good it really is. Then to make it actually run and drive. Then dealing with those front fenders. This project's success will depend on spending as little cash as possible. As interesting as Type 3's are, they are not worth the $$$ most other VW's are so it is not cost effective to spend a lot on them. It is very hopeful the low mileage is genuine, because the mechanicals should be basically unworn. Time will tell...

They'll have their day, as they are probably rarer than a split screen bus or KG these days. Looks like this could be a great find.

this could be a great find. It has so far been a team effort. Brent saw it and alerted me. I got in touch with the lister and set a time. Russ and I drove down and when I briefly hesitated, he saw fit to suggest "halfsies". I thought that to be a great suggestion and we will work together on it. After all, neither of us really have enough on our plates, lol! I really like the Fastback model, much better than the Notch or Square, but Sea Blue would be my colour of choice. Beggars cannot be choosers though and the originality of this one could render such minor "wants" moot. It'll be fun to clean 'er up…..and more fun to drive

I wonder what a Type 3 would look like with slot mags??? I can't work out how to print the picture to file, but this site will let you see what it looks like with whatever wheels you want.

I totally agree. I love the looks of that car! Unfortunately it is in Denmark and costs a ton! It came from California, but somehow managed to be the euro model? (side marker lights/reflectors)…..Or maybe I have that wrong… edumacate me someone

www.busselecta.com/type3/ I quite like this look. I know it is about as far from period correct as one could get, but I likes what I likes…

The thin whitewalls would look nice for the "original" look.
