Rob has been very busy plugging up that hole. And doing it the right way, with real welded in metal too! Because of the odd shape of the repair and multiple curvatures, it was easiest to make the repair using smaller sections. Getting there. Of course once done, this will all be properly seam sealed and won't have the stupid rust trap that VW put there that caused all this in the first place! Going to be good to see this car back in action again...

To finish off this part of the repair, Rob had to fabricate a complex patch. This whole area has multiple curves in different directions. Fun! Just about wrapped up for the inside portion of this repair. More prep-work to do before finishing...

Well looky here. Rob has completed all the welding on the driver's side and time to coat it in the Blue Steel. The back side of the repair looks like this. Rob elected to cut off the bottom of the reinforcement panel and leave it open so no water and mud can collect there anymore. A good idea considering what a nasty rust trap this area was. Keep in mind earlier Type 3's did not have this reinforcement panel at all, and subsequently the early cars don't rust in this area to the same extent. And of course the inside is all sealed up with a good paint to prevent rust from returning. Not going to happen on Rob's watch... Continued...

Now onto the other side... Was not as bad as the driver's side, but definitely some more welding required... Again the area to be repaired was broken down into easier to manage smaller sections. Here Rob has the first section in place. Note the rust converter on the metal in the background. Just about there. All the patches are in place. Once all welded up, again the Blue Steel was applied... And just like that, the repair is complete. All the strength is restored, and no more water and mud will collect in this area. Nice! With the nasty welding now all complete, Rob gets to move on to fun stuff like prepping those rare rust free fenders for paint! Going to be great to see this car back on the road once again! Now I need to get a move on with my projects...

So, well waiting for the weather to improve to do more painting, Rob has switched gears and is doing some necessary interior repairs. First up is removing the back seat (which is kind of a pain in the ass on Type 3's). Luckily it appears that rust was not found under here. He also made up a new black panel that goes behind the back seat. The original was some kind of very brittle pressboard and had deteriorated enough that it exploded apart upon removal. Rob will have to explain exactly what he made the new one out off... He intended to recover the sun rotted rear seat, but unfortunately the new cover supplied with the car was incorrect, likely for a Squareback instead of the Fasty. This sucks because new covers are very spendy. This seat cover will do the job for now. Fortunately the front covers were the correct ones. And rob dove in and stripped away the old sun rotted material. And look at the results! Looks great, and this was the first time he attempted something like this. Pretty cool and things are progressing well...

I am definitely happy with how it turned out especially because its something new to me. And of course I could'nt have done it without Rays help streching, pulling, heating and giving me dumb ideas on how to get the two buttons in hahahaha. As for the rear window piece the original exploded like peanut brittle when I tried to remove it so I used mahogany doorskin, I do wish i put thicker primer on it as you can see the wood gain but other than that also happy. the seat has been re assembled and time to start the passenger side with some knowlage of the mistakes I made the first time.

Probably unknown to most of you, Rob is quite the science buff and initially, insisted on the "string theory" for the buttons. He politely rejected my idea of using a long sharp punch. But after the pre-inserted strings were unavailable, unreachable or unfindable...we tried my "dumb" idea. Voila, you all can see the results haha. If anyone else wants to learn this method...Sewfine upholstery website has a good tutorial. Our motto has always been "ready-fire-aim" and repeat! But we always gitter-done...then have a good laugh.

Here we can see that Rob did get things finished up nicely under the hood. As mentioned elsewhere, he is probably going to do the painting on the fenders as well. I am sure it is going to be tough to concentrate on this instead of playing with that sweet new Squareback...

Hey Russ it's going to be fun finishing off the fasty!! I am getting impatient and want to get her on the road as my daily driver. Then I can take my time getting the squareback to where I want it.

Then I can take my time getting the squareback to where I want it. So it is gonna be a hard choice when figuring out which to drive and when
