So I must say I am not happy with what we were told on board and what you (the public) have been told about the rescue of the person who fell off of a BC Ferry yesterday......Read on!
So after arriving at Horseshoe Bay at 2 PM for the 3 PM sailing (everyone knows if you aren't there an hour before you have no chance) While waiting ,chatted up a guy with a 89 double cab going to Bowen Island tells me it was diesel and the old 1600 had 800 thousand kms WOW then he replaced with a 2l jetta diesel. For that many miles the body was very nice with no rot and just the usual surface places. That was my VW fix for the day.
Anyways back to the story....At 3;05 announcement Would the person with the BMW Z4 please return to your vehicle as you forgot to turn it off as it is still running. Hahaha . Announcement 3:10 we are sorry for the delay but we have a stuck on the ramp and when it gets moving we will sail then.....went down to look. A semi pulling a low bed with a 944 loader on it was high centered and was very stuck indeed on the ramp. After watching for a while of them shoving wood under the wheels for traction and seeing it fly out the other side I told one worker how to use the bucket and "pencil poke it" to raise the trailer and him doing nothing of the sort . Went back up stairs. Finally 4 PM we were off. So just at the other end of Bowen Island 3 long blasts---Man over board!! We were sitting across from the chief steward office and just before I thought I heard someone say stop the ship someone has jumped. Sure enough come about port side as he jumped starboard . Announcement 4:35 a passenger has fallen off the ship and we need your help for spotting he was wearing a black jacket. Ya right. If you accidentally fall you wave , If you decide to end it there you float. So after some time 35 minutes our rescue boat finds and pulls up on their pontoon then transfers to Vancouver police boat. I watched them doing CPR into the distance on their way back to Horseshoe Bay? North Van? floating for 35 minutes, cold water He's gone or By the way as the Police boat is getting distance ohh there is the hovercraft . Thanks for finally showing up but we got this. Announcement 5:05 arrival time now will be 6:15. Announcement 5:30 would the owner of a black bag located at the front of the ship .....please come and retrieve it. What the!!!!! First thing in my mind was BOMB and now do we have to turn around to get help from the bomb squad.
So lets get to the point already!!!
Sitting at the chief steward I heard at least 6 EYE witnesses clearly say they saw a man JUMP from the lower car deck
From what I saw it was a recovery NOT a RESCUE
The Hovercraft had nothing to do with it
20 minutes before arriving the captain came down to talk to us in person and answer questions. Nice touch ! Then he told us they would be dead heading back (returning empty) as the crew is very distraught . What the?? Maybe the 2 fellas in the rescue boat that grabbed the body. What about the guy flipping burgers etc. And what about all those people that have been waiting at Departure bay . They cancelled sailings for two guys that saw a dead body? I am quite sure the boat could have run with 2 less employees.
SOOO in closing.... Don't believe everything you read or see on the news. What a waste of tax money . By the way I was in a union for 27 years and have seen it all.
I finally put 4 tires back on Vancouver Island at 6:45
