Lets face it. Over the years a lot of what came with your VW when new seems to disappear. The prime example of this is what was once found in your glovebox. Every VW once came with at least an owner's manual, and likely it once came in a nice little folder too... Occasionally people kept all the other things that were once in those folders. While trying to find something else last night, I stumbled across this...
Back in 1986, my Mom's Aunt still owned her Shantung Yellow 1971 SuperBeetle with only 57,000 miles on it. I remember this car being near mint, and I even got to drive it once and it was like a new car. The owner's health was failing and my Dad agreed to help sell the car for her. I couldn't help myself and "liberated" the original literature from the car as well as its original Harrison Motors license plate frame before the car was sold. And I am glad today that I did...
Opening it up revealed the original owner card, and the salesman's card who sold it to her.
And here is what you find on the inside... The original service booklet to be stamped by the dealer, the owner's manual, and a listing of all the dealers in North America...
But there was more... Those are the original computer punch cards for the electronic diagnostics. They are usually loooong gone. And that list of available accessories is very interesting...
Look at what you could get through the dealer in 1971! I actually remember those chequered "hood covers" as being fairly common when growing up in the 1970's. Those rims are called "GT mag type wheels" in the text, but look like what we knew as Rivieras...
Even more interesting stuff in the interior. Look at those "GT bucket seats", "GT tunnel console", "GT steering wheel", "GT cockpit instrument panel"!!! How many Beetles were ever sold with any of this stuff on them???
And how about these dealer installed optional rims? The "GT mag type wheel" today referred to as "turtlebacks", or "Sprint Star wheels" available in chrome or mag grey... Continental radials were available or the popular Volkswagen Canada branded "Golden Miler" bias plys... Still running a set of those on my '62 Beetle today!!!
I kind of like the rare wheel trim rings and mudflaps as shown as they look very retro. "Taper Tip" tailpipes were also available...
The dealer sold roof racks as can be seen, but did you notice the header/muffler system? Not surprisingly known as the "GT muffler". The dealers did sell a lot of those cheesy stone guards (#37) however... And I bet Don will drool over #42...
And finally, what became of the car this literature once belonged too? It was sold to the first person that saw it, a women who absolutely loved it and phoned my Dad up later to tell him just that. Her boyfriend borrowed it to drive to work shortly after and drove straight into the back of a truck and completely destroyed the car. This was only about a month after she bought it... At least the literature survived
