Sunday was the day for the annual swapmeet held at the curling rink near the beach in Parksville. Myself and Don arrived there about 8:30-ish, and already the place was packed. Even more vendors then last year too. Rob and Reagh were there as well, scouting out the goods. Later Don spotted Commodore Collector as well. Just about everyone asked me where my Dad was, but he decided to stay home giving the reason that he just finished his car, so doesn't need anything! Wish I could say that... So Rob bought some VW pins and a keychain, Reagh picked up a cheap Dinky oval beetle that had been repainted an "interesting" colour, Don bought a variety of items but he can tell you himself. Meanwhile I found a few items I couldn't leave without...
I kind of have a thing for repair manuals, and got my hands on a few more. These two bus manuals came in a lot of four from the same seller. The left one covers only early bays but I bought it anyway. The Clymer on the right covers up to '74s, so no injection either. Both were in nice shape so I couldn't say no...
The early Clymer covers type IIIs up to 1966, but it has a blue fastback on the cover so I needed it too. Cost me $1 more then it did in 1966! The later Clymer on the right covers all type IIIs and was in nice condition. The seller of that had a lot of interesting stuff for sale including hand grenades ! Would have bought one for my kid, but they were kinda pricey. Some loser with another table even had his Nazi crap for sale!!!
Couldn't resist this early and late edition of the same book. The 1960 version was a former library book, and the original cover is mint under the library clear protector. The late version of the same is from 1977, the last year of the sedan sold in Canada and the US. Both were cheaply bought.
While outside, I spotted this before Don did. An original Harrison dealer folder containing the original owner's manual, warranty info, computer cards, etc.. It was being sold by the daughter of the original owner and she had some interesting stories about Dad's bus back in the day. Only problem is the bus was a '71, not the '72 manual I actually need. There was one of those at a different table, but the guy wanted waaay more than I wanted to pay, and was not interested in lower offers, so I walked. As it turned out later, the '71 manual I bought was once owned by someone my Dad used to work with...
Don spotted this rack (imagine Don spotting a "rack"), and he insisted I buy it. Given how the Buy Sell and Trade was once so important around here, I paid the $4 and bought a small piece of local history...
Already on the wall in the garage and making use of it too!
Also had to get some period plates for the Fastback. I snoozed and I loozed on buying a 1969 three digit plate, because the seller wouldn't stop yapping with a friend. By the time I came back, it was long gone... Oh well. Overall I was pleased with the "finds", and none of them were expensive. The only VW parts I saw were all from the same scrapped '69 Beetle, and the seller wanted top dollar. Another guy had some bare 1965 doors, but these were expensive too and I didn't need any. There were lots of slot mags, but none would fit Brent's bus. One guy had some fairly rare VW tin toys and plastic models, but his prices were waaaay out there... What will next year bring???
