Seems odd that there is no siping that makes it to the edge of the tire, from what it looks like on Ratwell's site. Limited quantity at Can Tire; wonder if that is because they are clearing out old stock? I see on R's site that it was listed in 06.

Don, what is this "sipping" you speak of? Being that it made it into Ratwell's list it must be okay. When I hit the Cantire order button to test, it said the tires would be ordered in to my particular store.

Sorry Tom, I allowed an extra p to sneak in there From Wikipedia: Siping is a process of cutting thin slits across a rubber surface to improve traction in wet or icy conditions.

I shall add that to my vocabulary, thanks! I think I'll take a pic of my continentals for comparison.

When I hit the Cantire order button to test, it said the tires would be ordered in to my particular store. I was recommended a name brand of tires that I had never heard of by Cedar Tire. But they said it was a good tire, and since I have known Barry at Cedar Tire he hasn't steered me wrong. They are Hercules Power CV 8 ply 195R14 for $104.35 plus the $5 Environmental Tire Levy Pass/Lt Truck per tire. It is a good deal because he bought them low priced and since that time the tire supplier has increased the price 2 or 3 times and Barry has not followed suit (whereas I think Can Tire would have been upping the price if they could justify it). I like the look of the tire, but obviously won't be for everyone. Barry says they specifically brought them in for the Westies, water or air, in the area.

Thanks for that tire tip Don. I have always stuck with the OEM recommended 185s. Is there an advantage to the 195s? Are they tougher on the steering box? Right now I run 185R14 Hankook RA08s, when I bought them a few years ago they were only $75 US from the Busdepot Still a good deal now at $109. They were the standard for Brazilian buses until the end of that run. Mine cost me $125 Canadian each door to door, then I had them mounted and balanced in town. Interestingly, I contacted Hankook head office in Ottawa to try and get a set of the RA08s in Canada, they said sorry can't do it. My thought was that they could just pop a set on a container ship with the rest of their orders and I would pick them up somewhere...but no. Hankook sell a lot of tires here, just not those ones. Don't need any tires at the moment, but maybe I'll have a talk with Barry next time. www.busdepot.com/ra08

What about these BF Goodrich tires? A bit expensive at $CAD 205.00 Tire LT195/75R14/D BF Goodrich All-Terrain K/O Bus '68-'79 Vanagon '80-'91"Rugged tires for your VW Bus or Vanagon. These tires, at LT195/75R14/D are slightly larger than the original 185R14, 99 load index, reinforced sidewall. These are bad-a** big meats for your ride. Tires are for local pickup only, we do not ship tires at this time." www.germansupply.com/home/customer/product.php?productid=18203&cat=&page=1
