Ok, off we go... I have been wanting to go to this show for a number of years now, but was never able to make it happen. That finally changed... Myself, Don, and Victor set off on Friday morning to trek down to Seattle via my usual transport, the 1974 Resfalia. The first stage was uneventful until we arrived at the peace arch crossing. While waiting for some time in the lineup, I happened to spot a "VW" in the distance in the park. Don reluctantly set out to investigate...
This "artwork" was called the "Attack Bug", and was designed by a Canadian artist. Shame they used a '60's Beetle...
And here we are waiting in line. For 45 minutes...
We were not the only ones on our way to the show however... This Victoria based bus was on its way down as well...
While nearing Seattle we spotted this. And they were quite correct about the slow label...
Our first stop was to the parking lot of Burgermaster, were the first event was to take place. We arrived quite early and got a decent parking spot. This was good, because in a few hours, vintage VWs took over the entire place. I left it to Don to take pictures of this part of the event. The above 1968 was a genuine one owner car. The owner never really kept the car original however, and had 1970s pictures of the car back in the day to prove it...
How about this highly modified Type 4 based monster? The cooling is via two large electric fans on top of the engine, and another fan and oil cooler combo underneath. The alternator is driven under the engine and you will note the exhaust exit location is in front of the back wheels. The owners goal was to have a VW that sounded like no other, and he succeeded in this for sure. The sound was very hard to describe as a cross between a V-8 and a Harley...
Don will update the rest of the Burger Meat (their spelling) later...
After the Burger Meat, (the burgers were quite tasty by the way), we headed to Steves' place overlooking lake Washington. Their house is from the 20's and is very nicely preserved. Bus was happy in the driveway for the night...
All the rest of the show pictures will be posted tomorrow...

So day two, and a relatively short drive to Shoreline Community College. We arrived fairly early in order to grab the best buys in the swap meet. The swap itself was amazing, far bigger then any previous ones I had been to. Everything was VW related, or in some cases vintage camping related...
For all you Coleman fans, check out the goodies for sale... Several vendors had items like this. One guy was selling a LOT of different vintage coolers for those who need trinkets to fill their roof racks!
Onto the VW's. I will let the pictures do most of the talking...
This is an air-cooled show only, but Vanagons are the exception that are allowed. The unusual colour on this one caught my eye.
Bay windows as far as the eye could see...
Low mileage Bays are always a rarity. This one featured only 65,000 miles and was very original. Mine rolled 280,000 km on the trip however...
This nice 13 window was pulling an Eriba Puck trailer.
The inside of the trailer was very inviting.
She wouldn't stop playing with her phone, so was included in the picture...
Not sure of the year; parts mismatches going on...
Another nice Riviera Camper. There were a lot of these models at this show.
Proof that we made it there...
This nice looking '71 Westy tin-top was parked next to me.
This was the interior of the above bus.
Clean '72 panel.
Another nice Riviera, this one labeled Camp Mobile. Never seen that before...
This show had over 230 registered cars as well as about 20 non-registered. And almost all of them air-cooled!!! Because of the large numbers, I did not take photos of every VW there. I tried to take the ones that I like, and others that would likely appeal to those that were not at the show... Lots more to come...

How about a Thing in original paint and graphics?
This military version appealed to me. There were over a dozen type 181's at the show...
Lots of splitties.
I kind of liked this firewagen.
The fire pump is powered by a 36 horse style industrial engine.
Bit of a Coleman fetish...
Don liked this Class 11 type Beetle.
Is your flat four too slow? How about this patriotic supercharged V8 version. Was actually quiet when it drove in...

This Oval looks like a Standard model, but in fact had lots of modifications to give it the "look", the owner was after. Don and I both liked what was done.
This '58 featured clear coat over the remains of original paint and lots of rust. There is a large Hawaiian population in Seattle and they have their own VW club. This car was just one of many that participated from their group.
It seems hard to believe that a flat four could even motivate this track machine... Was licensed as a vintage snowmobile...
I took a picture of this creation for the logos on the doors. My Dad drank copious amounts of Harvey Wallbangers back in the '70s and still has an old bottle of Galliano in the basement...
This nasty 411 had been dragged out of the bush and fixed up just enough to run. Only one side of the car had been washed, the other side was still covered with green slime...
A later 412 showing off the huge trunk space in this model.
The only Fastback at the show with an unusual two tone paint job.
Early Notchbacks are the most desirable Type 3 it seems; the blue Squareback was the best condition of those models at the show.

A nice '68 convertible with a '67 in the background.
This early convertible was a the Victoria show. This shot shows the fitted luggage under the hood. This car had all the accessories it seems.
Dash was full of goodies too.
A 1979 Epilogue model in triple black. Rare.
Another early big window with "broken" suspension.
A '67 in Savannah Beige.
This nice '62 was for sale, I think around $11,000.
There are always raffle prizes at this show. This car was actually the grand prize a few years ago. Someone explain to me the stupid rope wrapped around the bumper...
Don says this was my favourite, but he ain't telling the truth... I have a lot of things to say about this specific car, but will save them for another thread...
Still more...

Yes I liked that blue one...
There were a lot of early big window ragtops at the show. Most were quite nice too.
This '66 has an interesting story. The owner bought it as an accident write off. He had to replace the entire front end including the dashboard! You would never know that from the quality of the bodywork and paint. I think he won his class too.

Big Fatty slot mags!
Lots of Ghias. I think 17 were registered. Back to them shortly...
Nice '67 sunroof.
Liked the green on the above Oval.

Hope you know I was being sarcastic about your "favourite" Russ Great pics! Hard to take them with that sun melting everything and casting those harsh shadows. Glad you were doing the duty!

Back to the Ghias again...
Late Type 3 Ghia was very nice.
Now this low light was by far my favourite. It was just beautiful.
Look at the BONDO in that poor low light Ghia's nose. Surprisingly that was not the ugliest one there...

This was the ugliest. Look carefully and you will see a Suzuki 1300 twin cam in there driving the front wheels. Why would anyone ever think that was remotely a good idea???
One for tony. This is a very original 1951 Beetle. All the proper type parts are there and it looks awesome just the way it is.
Beside it is another '51 split Beetle. It was obviously modified and pretty much ALL the vintage magic was lost. Who knows, maybe the owner started out with a bare shell and couldn't afford the necessary missing parts...
Lotsa windows equals lots of dough. Was quite nice...
It seems several split bus owners put there middle seat in like this...
There was quite the line up of dune buggies present.
Just another ratty Barndoor with tired old engine in the back...
Or not. Wow!
Don out for a cruise. This door is the right year and colour for our Fastback. The original has a nasty "oil-can" dent in it and is rusted out at the bottom. This door was rust free and cost a whopping $30. Victor complained on the way home that it was in his way however... Whiny kids...
Is it any wonder that I am kinda fat...
As the show wound down, I took a picture of this unusual Beetle and trailer combo. Another magazine car...
Ready to leave, that is Steve with his daughter Dash, and me holding Rainy the dog. Victor looks unimpressed as usual and Don looks uncharacteristically happy! Thanks to Steve, Bonnie and Dash for hosting us for a couple of days.
Stuck at Tsawassen, amped up on Coke and chips. We missed the ferry by one vehicle and had a long wait. At least waiting in a bus isn't that bad, with ice cold drinks, snacks, and curtains to keep the sun out...
A great end to a great trip. I am glad I went, and hope to return next year to this show, and maybe explore Seattle a bit more the next time. Anyone else want to take their VW next year???
