Some idiot decided to drive my squareback at 85 to 90 mph for an hour on a hot sunny day, the engine then died.
Does anyone know anyone who can repair my engine properly for a fair price?
I have used lots of places on the island to repair my cars and have yet to find a place I can truly trust and who genuinely stand by their work
mine is the 1600 twin solex

What exactly happened? Exploded? Seized? Funny noises? No power?

Yes, what exactly is the issue? There might not be anything major wrong with it. Also, if it needs to come apart, why not do it yourself. The Vw engine is about as simple as they come.

I was just scanning through, saw this and thought I had answered it, so apologies for the delay in answering.
Hot Sunday afternoon, an hour on the highway, flying, pretty fast and way too fast for an old air cooled engine
I suspect I ran out out of oil, but confess to checking nothing, got the car towed and that was it.
Bit of a mechanical noise, but not a bang, I turned engine off whilst driving and coasted to side. Engine would not turn on starter, loads of burnt oil smoke, i thought she was going to flame up, deffo burning oil, whatever was left of it....
not seen car since
not sure what to do, or what broke or whether engine is toast or just partly toast?
not sure whether to put duck oil down cylinders and attach a big bar and try and turn it, or even if i can attach a big bar
not sure how i diagnose what is wrong
sorry to be so vague, and late, with the info

You'll save yourself a bunch of money if you do some basic diagnostics on it before taking it to a shop. Pull the dipstick and see how much (if any) oil is in it. See if the oil smells burnt. Put a 21mm wrench on the generator pulley any try to turn the engine at least 2 turns. Check and see if you have clearance on all valves. If the engine turns over and still has oil in it, I would try changing the oil and trying to get it to start. Be prepared to shut it off quickly if it sounds bad. If it's screwed, it's screwed, but it might not be that bad. Performing the above procedures should tell you a lot and cost next to nothing.

Burnt oil smell and seizure is not promising. Sounds like it was seriously overheating and pushed too hard. If you are going to try to restart it if you can get it to turn, then check the ignition points for closing up first. This is likely the most common failure on any air-cooled engine and will cause overheating.

I suspect it's blown, whether it can be rescued I don't know. It is currently up at Annex on the South Island Highway.
I might pop up on Monday to have a look, but I don't hold out much hope.
I will take the tools as described above, but the burnt oil was 30 minutes and I genuinely thought she was going to go up in flames. Perhaps that would have been a better and cheaper result, although we don't need another aircooled in vw heaven

Good luck with it. Hopefully won't be too bad...

went to take shroud off, tock socket set but could not get bottom bolt out as needed a 10mm spanner as exhaust in the way...didn't have one
rolled car in second, dropped clutch, stopped immediately, signs not good, burnt oil along bottom
tried getting socket on the main pulley on the engine, removed rubber protector...seems a fair bit bigger than 21mm, not sure on that one

I agree with your prognosis of "not good". I feel for you man. That's a bummer. I only have one 1600 and it's in my bug. Good luck, hope you can get it figured out.

You should just be able to pop the cover off over the generator belt and turn the engine over (if it's not seized) with a 21mm wrench on the generator pulley nut. No need to unbolt anything or access the crank bolt. You're not trying to free up the engine, just check to see if it still turns.
