It has been about 16 years since I have owned a VW. 3 weeks ago I bought a 72 bus with a custom roof. And have been re obsessed with all things VW! I was making an appointment to get the roof painted and a fellow named Jon introduced himself and told me to check out this group. I am looking forward to the meet up coming up! I have quite the project ahead of me to get this bus to where I want it to be. But the bones are in phenomenal shape considering she is 43 years old. And it is so great to see all the smiles she gets and feel the VW community connection again So far I have managed to get the rusted shut back hatch open and stripped down the inside so I can get really good idea of what is going on. There is a smell of gas that I getting Bavarian to take a look at. But she was loved and overall runs (and stops) great. Cheers, Willow

It will be good to see another '72 on the road again. Some people don't like the '72, primarily for poor engine access. I don't mind them, however I may be biased given I have a '72 in Chianti Red as well...

I was wishing that there was an overhead hatch like in other years. Was wondering about the feasibility of cutting a hatch. I guess the fire barrier would be a concern with that?

Welcome to the forum! Be careful that you don't damage the value of your bus. If you are going to properly weld in a hatch from another model year, then maybe. Otherwise, I would suggest leaving it as is (my personal preference with my vehicles). These buses are rising in $ value (going nuts more correctly!) and many in the scene are looking for originality when shopping for their vehicles. That said, there are still lots of Bays out there, so if you are not too bothered about originality, don't want to make it too perfect to enjoy and simply want to make your life easier with no intention of selling, then it's your bus. I believe that your best bet would still likely be to cut a section from a scrapper and weld it in, that way you get a hatch that fits properly and seals any engine bay gas / smells out and retains factory fire integrity. You never know, it might even make your bus more desirable with the improved access. Enjoy!

All good points. My intention is to own this baby for a very looooong time. So I am thinking custom is not a problem for me. But this will be a project for down the road. Other things to get to first.....Thanks for the advice.
