Shoptales9: It runs just fine!
This story is from several years ago and names may be changed to protect the innocent! Remember back several years ago when the economy tanked and various government incentives were put in place to get people to spend some dough and keep things moving? One of them was a government program to get people to trade in their old crappy cars on a brand new one and they would give I think a minimum of $2000 for the old car. Unlike push, pull, and drag sales, this trade-in had to be a licensed and running/driving vehicle to qualify. Sooooo a long term customer comes in with a rusty old Sentra that they have owned since new. It has suffered a head gasket failure so severe that coolant is entering the cylinders and causing engine seizure due to something called hydro-locking. This is because the cylinder fills up with liquid coolant which cannot be compressed which stops the engine from turning over and will not start. As the car is rusted out and has well over 300,000 km on it, fixing it up is not worth it. The customer was planning to take advantage of the government trade in scheme soon anyway but now that was not an option as the car was no longer capable of running. Or was it.....? To qualify for the trade in the car had to run and drive, but nobody said for how long, did they? Removing all the coolant from the engine made it start easily. The customer drove it like that to the dealership and it ran fine. The sales person verified it did move and drove it to the back of the lot, trade-in accepted, everyone was happy! Please note that most cars traded in on this scheme were quickly scrapped after so no guilt is required here.
