So myself, Don, and Reagh were moving various VWs from one storage area to another this weekend. And while up in Campbell River on Saturday, we spotted this...
Know what it is? Mr. Don, the obscure military vehicle aficionado, knew right away it was an Austrian built Pinzgauer!
And here is the proof. Built by Steyer-Puch, these machines were designed for the military and used by various armies around the world.
These things are very boxy and apparently are one of the most versatile military vehicles made.
This one even had an escape hatch on the roof. Or was it for the gunner???
Note the dual struts on the back...
Very industrial dash. Doesn't that look like a vintage VW steering wheel??? Maybe it is...
Looks like more seating in the back too. This example had collector plates and was very clean.
All Pinzgauers featured an in-line four cylinder air-cooled engine. Was fairly big too, at 2.5 litres and provided enough power for a top speed of 110 km/hr. This example is a 710 four wheel drive version produced from 1971 to 1985. Less then 20,000 were produced and the remaining ones are desirable and expensive today. Don would likely trade his Iltis for one in a heartbeat...
Also this rare picture of Reagh and one of his elusive Super Beetles. This one is a 1977 version and note the "interesting" hubcaps...

Never heard of those, ironically they switched from the custom built air-cooled motor to a Volkswagen water-cooled diesel for the 2nd generation model. Here are a couple of cool promotional films, gen 1 and gen 2:

Driving through the Fraser Valley a couple of weeks ago I passed a transport truck with three Pinzgauers (or maybe they were the smaller Haflingers) on the back. Wonder where they were headed?

Don would likely trade his Iltis for one in a heartbeat... Maybe….but I do love the open air Iltis plus its association with both Germany and Canada. This Pinzgauer needs bigger tires, but it sure would be a blast to take for a spin. Here is what the engine area likely looks like. I saw it down at "Ovals" in Milton, WA some time ago. Wonder where they were headed? The Haflinger is a much smaller vehicle, essentially being the size of a golf cart. They are super capable also though and look like a lot of fun. |
