As many of you know, my Dad is not in any way interested in VW's. Here are a few pictures of his current project.... It is an Australian built 1937 Chevrolet Ute. Sort of like an earlier El Camino, it is a car based truck. Not my kind of thing at all, but he seems to love it. It's drive train is 60 years newer however... Looks kind of ugly at the moment but that is a 1997 Corvette LS1 sitting there complete with the six speed manual trans as well. It is my job to make this thing actually run. Oh joy....

Here is a long overdue update on this project...
The bodywork was completed and painted, the body is now permanently reattached to the chassis. Note that the front bumper is actually a modified early Beetle bumper! But don't worry, it was a reproduction!
Looking good at the back. And it is a split window too.
Here is the rear mounted Corvette six speed transmission. That should keep Dad busy. He is 75 years old by the way...
Can you spot another VW part in here? The glove box and surrounding metal is 1966 Beetle! Dad is having a lot of fun with this project...

If he needs a test pilot .... You mean it'll fly too?? Certainly is coming together nicely. He has come a long way in a short amount of time. Isn't that rear end going to have plexi on it so it will be visible when the hard box cover is open?

That looks amazing. I don't envy him keeping that lot clean though. The detailing looks fantastic.

Although I didn't take a pretty picture, I do have an update. Dad was ready to bleed the hydraulic brakes and clutch. The brakes went ok after some playing around with the pedal linkage adjustment. The clutch however had issues. Despite mucho bleeding, it was apparent the pressure plate was not quite releasing the clutch disc. The clutch parts were original to the Corvette engine and had only 8000 miles on them so should have been fine. Except they were not... The "fingers" on the pressure plate should all be at the same height when on the bench, and when bolted up to the flywheel. Unfortunately this was not the case and Dad's pressure plate had two bent fingers which would not allow the clutch to release. A major bummer as on this design, the engine would have to come out again! Not a lot of fun, and the new clutch cost over $700! It is back in place and verified to work, so Dad is a bit happier now. I sincerely hope that engine never has to be removed again!!!

I guess I don't need to go very fast... Dad has some serious bucks invested in this project. None of my VW projects EVER exceeded $9000 and that was spread over many years too. The Cougar in the end cost close to $11,000, but it took ten years to finish it!

Hmmm. Wish that was the case for mine. This is why wifey isn't too keen on an addition to the stable!

Hi Terry, the dashboard "grain" was done with a funky kit that Dad got from somewhere. It was a multi stage process involving rollers with patterns on them. I will find out more info on this. It does look like some kind of bed liner stuff on the floor as it is very solid when you touch it. Dad was supposed to get his computer reprogrammed tonight, but the guy that was coming to do it gave him some lame-ass excuse so he is unsure of when that may occur. This sucks because he worked very hard to get the engine back in and ready for this day. I will take some more pictures soon...

Ok I was talking to one of the people here and he brought up the idea of a garage tour. Given that I have posted up stuff about my Dad's hot rod project, it was suggested that maybe he would be interested in having us over for a garage tour. Dad said this would be fine as long as it was after Christmas. If you guys are interested in seeing what Dad is up too, and seeing all his past projects in person, then let me know here. Some of us have time off between Christmas and New years, would a weekend or afternoon mid week tour be good? Evenings? Come and see where I get my car DNA from and you can even laugh at my first '66 Beetle sitting silently in the back of the carport...
