I once went to a local restaurant with my entire family for a special event. The waitress was extremely miserable, did not want to open the extra seating area for our large group, and made sure we knew we were inconveniencing her. At the end of the meal, the manager came over and asked how our meal was. As usual, most of the family stated everything was "fine". My Mom was quite horrified when I piped up how I really felt about being treated like dirt. We never returned to that restaurant, and never will...

I am curious as to where you sourced your statistics about business failures Stan, and how it was determined which of your 2 ideological philosophies that they adopted, as the foundation of they're respective business models. Good customer service has always been taught in schools of business, as a value of day to day operations. The school of reality for most intelligent business owners, dictates one primary basis of survival, that turning a satisfactory bottom line profit with respect to the overall investment and risk of the vested stakeholders is the only real key to existence. Solving the riddle of supply and demand has always been the greatest hurdle to overcome. Choosing to operate in the "high quality" marketplace is also choosing to compete in the smallest of markets globally, unfortunately limiting the opportunity to be successful. It is a sad reality, that the vast majority of consumers are in the middle to lower income brackets worldwide, and don't seem to place quality over low price as a priority. Dictating to most entrepreneurs, that their best chance for a reasonable return on investment and survival, is to fight in the "volume" marketplace. Sadly, the result in general, is that people like us, seeking high quality goods and services, are expendable. Just my 2-cents, after spending 25 years battling in that arena.

As part of my duties with the TSE, I had to present sales seminars to bond salesmen (yes they were all men). One of the universal truths in sales is that if you are a disgruntled consumer, and you tell 200 people face to face (there was very little social media those days) it would eventually ruin a sales organization, because a certain percentage of those 200 people would tell other people and so on and so on.

I remember back in about '81 working for a shall we say gentleman (Herb's Automotive) , I don't know how it was possible that these words came from 'his' mouth , but he said if you treat your customers well they will tell a couple of people but if you don't they will tell 20 people and that could ruin your business eventually or even sooner! Personally I haven't heard of or worked for a boss nastier than him , and I'm sure some of you on this site can attest to that!

Thanks Stan, am I to conclude that the 80% failure group, directly supplied the answer that, poor customer service and focusing on the bottom line, eventually led to all their failures.

In a not unrelated instance, I just noticed coming back from Parksville, a certain VW place beside the highway appears to be shut down and is in the process of being emptied out. Does anyone know the story behind that? Stan

Interesting. Don't know what is going on there, but do know that the owner has his fingers in other pies that are more lucrative to him...

I carry a couple of home made cards that I've given out to managers on occasion. They say" Remember Me? I'm the fellow who goes into a restaurant, sits down and patiently waits while the waitresses do everything but take my order. I'm the fellow who goes into a store and stands quietly while the sales clerks finish their little chit-chat. I'm the fellow who never complains when you advertise a product on sale and then doesn't bring it into your store. Yes, you might say I'm a good guy. But do you know who else I am? I am the fellow who never comes back, and it amuses me to see you spending thousands of dollars on advertising every year to get me back into your store, when I was there in the first place and all you had to do to keep me coming back was to give me a little service, and show me a little courtesy. Stan I like that...might have to adopt it myself.
A part that's missing...businesses who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars turning their vehicles into rolling billboards then allow those billboards to be driven like complete jerks on the roads. I'm the fellow who they just cut off...and the fellow who will look elsewhere for the same services you're advertising...
