Yesterday I got up dark and early (3:45am) to get to Don's and make the 5:15 ferry. The purpose of this adventure was to travel to the land of cheap liquor and ammo, found in your local convenience store. Marysville, Washington state to be precise, the location a rather seedy looking chicken coop. Inside was something Don had been dreaming of for years, and it wasn't the smell of aging chicken poop. Nestled among the rusting Fiats and DKW's was the object in question, a not so gleaming 1965 SAAB! This ancient relic of Sweden's past was ripe for the picking and Don could not say no. The owner (Steve) has on obvious fetish for obscure vehicles, but was willing to part with this one.... The FJ had no problem towing the U-Haul. Back at home after a very long day. Everything went smoothly too except we ran into some Fourth of July lineups at the border and were not quite sure what lane to be in. Lucky the poles separating the lanes where made of plastic and popped back up when you drive over top of them... The American border people were great. The Canadian border people were fine too. The Canadian Customs officials were not quite up to the same standards. To put it politely as possible, there official motto should be ABSOLUTE GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. It really was like something from the movies, but Don deserves to tell this part of the tale... Back safely in Canada finally... Victor (my kid), thinks this thing is strange... Yes we know it ain't a VW but it isn't your average form of transport is it. How about a front wheel drive, inline three cylinder engine with no valves, lifters, pushrods, rockers, camshaft, or even anywhere to add or check the oil. Yes this thing is a two stroke engine like your old chainsaw! The three speed manual with column shift is a little odd too. Lots of cool detailing however and is very retro in its styling. Don has some unusual plans for this thing.... but then that is not very surprising is it...

What kind of talk is that...."three speed manual with column shift is a little odd".....I resemble that remark! My first vehicle was a 1951 chev 5 window pickup with a 3sp column shift. With nothing in the back I could make 2nd gear rubber with that thing, column shift and all. Great truck except the drivers door had the annoying habit of coming open on right hand corners when you're driving with your right arm around some girl. You end up driving with your left foot on the running board, your right foot dragging on the pavement your left hand hanging on to the steering wheel and the girl screaming. I got quite good at controling the truck like that. Stan

I wrote that and was actually incorrect. Don's Saab is actually a FOUR speed column shift! He will get back to this project AFTER he does a few other minor things, like a big ass boat!

Ok Russ...then I admit a 4 speed on the column is a bit "out there".
And Yes Don, finish that boat, we all want a harbour tour! Maybe participate in a stranded tanker rescue. Stan

I spotted one of these recently driving down Blanshard St. beside Mayfair Shopping Centre. The engine sounded tinny and more like a motorcycle than a car. I think it's an Auto Union 1000 or perhaps a DKW. While not a SAAB they do look similar and are from the same era. Gotta love a 2 stroke engine! Didn't have a camera handy so I used this Internet pic

Please accept my apologies for the confusing post. I'm a newbie to this forum. I was trying to respond to the posting about the DKW/Auto Union station wagon. I believe that the car spotted on Blanchard was likely mine. It's a green on green 1959 DKW Universal with a 3 cylinder, two-stroke, front wheel drive and four on the tree. I also have 1960 DKW Junior with a similar engine. As I understand it, the Saab two-stroke was their copy of a DKW engine. If anyone on here knows of other DKWs or Saab two-strokes on the Island, I would be very interested in getting in touch. These are rare and unusual vehicles that need to be preserved. Finding parts can be a challenge, but I have some knowledge of where to look, if anyone needs help.

Welcome Deek. Don't worry, no confusion. This site has its quirks. I'm Don, the owner of the Saab pictured above. I have a few more too . I am pretty sure you are correct on the Saab 2 stroke being a copy of the DKW engine. To what degree I don't know. The Saab above is the "long nose" version made from 65 to 68-ish with a 2 stroke. After that they went to a German Ford V4. Before that the Saab was know as a Bullnose and it had a slightly different engine. I don't know all the details, but the radiator was back behind the engine…an odd design, but a much cooler looking vehicle to my mind. Tom (Busaddict) gave me your email, the same as you list here on your profile. It'd be cool to talk with another infected by the 2 Stroke! I will PM you my number. Cheers, Don

Fair enough, but this is the non-vw chat, "anything goes" portion of the site. Or so it says. Besides, I speak Volkswagen, too. I've had a number of them. What would you like to know? Fun fact: Volkwagen bought DKW/Auto Union from Daimler-Benz in the 1960s and killed off the DKW line which was in direct competition with beetle. They then revived the Audi line (which was a dead member of Auto Union that had not survived the second world war) and adopted the Auto Union ring logo as its own. The first cars used to re-establish Audi in 1965/66 were basically DKW F102 sedans. The DKWs may not be of interest to the air-cooled folks on here, but they established the front-wheel drive pattern used by all modern VW and Audi cars.

This is the section for non-VW chat. Any thing does go and is most welcome here. A lot of us on this site either have, or once owned other interesting vehicles. I once had a '67 Mercury Cougar for 20 years and loved it. Won't ever sell my '69 Chevy truck either. AND I still have a thing for Corvairs even though I have never owned one... And yes I find early SAABs intriguing...
