Sooo, this story is from close to 20 years ago at my first place of employment during my training days... The shop I once worked at specialized in propane and natural gas conversions, primarily in pickups and full size vans. We did work on everything and anything else as well however, and even the odd VW too. Highlights were a very original black '57 Beetle that was once owned by Dave Tomblin's mother if I remember right. The current owner at the time was a somewhat eccentric older woman. Her complaint was poor warm starting and poor fuel economy. She had no idea that the car was equipped with a factory manual choke and that it was in the pulled out position...
Anyway that was not the story I was going to tell... We had one customer, lets call him Mr. S. This guy was quite an interesting individual and had many stories. Anyway Mr. S owned a late '80's Toyota Four Runner, a very popular vehicle at that time. And like many Toyota owners, he was very particular about following the owner's manual EXACTLY in terms of maintenance. That Toyota enjoyed its very regular oil changes as well as all other fluids. If the book said to change filters/plugs/belts, etc. at certain intervals, they were changed. This Toyota was likely in the best mechanical shape possible and ran and drove perfectly...
And it looked like an absolute pile of S**T!
It seems that some people understand the value of maintenance, but are completely clueless that washing and cleaning your car is important to extend the life too. Mr. S's Toyota was always filthy, and he never cleaned out the accumulated mud underneath as well. He was disappointed when the chrome rear bumper rotted apart and couldn't understand why it would happen. Duh. That Toyota died an unfortunate early death due to rust and general neglect. I am sure ran perfectly to the end...
Now get out there and wash your beloved VW...
