I have a 1600 in my 65 Bug. It came to me used. Possibly has a bigger cam in it? No idea what's on the inside. It burns a bit of oil and has zero end play at TDC. (it has some play at 180 degrees out) I am looking for someone who can rebuild it for me. I wish I could say that money is no object, but that is a pipe dream. If any takers, pls call Jason at 250-797-1554. Have a great day gang!

Mitchy, I was the one who checked this out. It is odd as I have not seen an engine with "variable" end play before. Pressing/releasing the clutch is having an influence on it. I am assuming the thrust surface on bearing/case is damaged and changes depending on what the clutch is doing, and what position the crankshaft is in. It is possible the bearing next to the flywheel is moving back and forth in its bore too. Hard to say until things come apart...

I've dismantled many well used 1600s over the years, and I'd say that 80-90% of them have thrust bearings that are loose in the case, so probably wise to plan on having the case machined, if it's not too pounded.

Russ looked at it. He showed me the endplay at 180 degrees out. then he put it to TDC and zero end play. I haven't pulled it out to check flywheel shims yet
