It looks ok.......on the outside!

YUCK what a mess in there

A question is coming up for you wise guys:

Next I cleaned up the fuel gauge sending unit , which cleaned up nicely..........on the OUTSIDE.

I put an ohm meter on it and it showed 57 ohms every time whether right side up , upside down , shake it , or bang it , I guess having a reading is good.

Before I take it apart should I immerse it in carb cleaner or Varsol or something?

I followed this thread for cleaning three of my tanks, two VW tanks and one from the Saab. The Bus ones were a piece-o-cake compared to the Saab because they weren't baffled like the Saab's. But I was baffled so I did ask a few questions on the thread. Seemed to work well. I did not deal with the amount of rust you were looking at, but the cement mixer should have done the worst stuff…good idea!!
