Ok, once again I took a crapload of pictures. I tried to get every air-cooled VW that was there. I am sure some may have been missed and at least one was intentionally missed. Sorry to the water-cooled crowd, I didn't take any useful pictures as heat stroke was setting in by that time.... It will take some time to load all the pictures, so check back on this thread later...
As usual, our trek started out from RONA Nanaimo. And it looked like an all bus experience... Goldberg's green Westy, Don's "Uncle Bill" bus (driven by Brian), and Don's Riviera.
Also present was Rob's high top, my Restfalia, and David's special Vanagon (which you might recognize as the stolen van recently).
But wait, what is that in the background? Jerry didn't like us so he parked WAAAY off by himself.... Immediately after leaving the parking lot we spotted a nice splitty heading the other way. It was Mark and his dad with the '57 on the road! We stopped on the side of the road and waited for them to catch up. Mark and his Dad worked hard to get the bus running to make it to Victoria. Did they make it??? Read on to see...
We stopped a couple of times on the way so Mark could check his oil and other things. He only had about 20 miles on the engine before the start of the trip, so it was prudent to check things out. Other than an oil leak from one valve cover, things seemed OK at this point. Reagh joined the convoy in Ladysmith, and a nice orange '67 Beetle later on. Once we arrived at Gyro Park in Victoria, we set up a great shelter that Reagh brought with him and headed off to the swapmeet. I found some nice red Beetle door panels to fit my '70 project. Mark found a Ghia manual and some other goodies, Reagh unknowingly scooped Jerry on some chrome rims and tires, Don bought pretty much anything shaped like a bus.. The above picture is of a nice early bay Westfalia that I am pretty sure used to be in Nanaimo. Really don't like the nasty hubcap on the front however!!!
Not a Porsche fan but others are so here is a 356 that looks interesting...
This is Chris' class 11/zombie apocalypse survivor Beetle. Actually his daughter's car, or so he says...
Brian liked this Ghia convertible. Had a lot of work done to make it this nice...
You just know it would be a blast to take this out in the bush...
"Big Juan" was the only Thing there and had "spam can" on the license plate frame.. Mmmm, Spam...
This speedster replica is a regular at this event and is very nicely done.
Lots more to come...
Here we have a dune-buggy. First one I have seen without shiny rims and I kind of liked it...
This type 3 Notchback has been a regular at this show for many years...
A couple of more Porsches. Real or Replica? I did not look but I bet people who own the real thing hate that question....
This early big window was rolling on centreline type rims.
Liked this early '70's Beetle. Even I admit I would drop and narrow that front end just a bit...
Big carbed Oval doing the negative camber thing...
"Going down to South Park, going to have my self a patina Oval"...
Looks like a tasty Ruby Red '65 sunroof with pop-outs.
This 1969 Beetle had one family owner from new. You would swear it was always that colour but originally was built as Zenith blue. Was a very nice Beetle...
Cornell's Superbeetle was looking great in the sunshine.
More to come...
Here we have a nice looking '65? rolling on Sprint Stars.
Brian once owned a splitty bus just like this. Given he was a dope smoking hippy at the time I am surprised he remembers this...
Didn't get a chance to check out the only Squareback at the show in detail...
A couple more of those non-VW sporty machines. Reagh probably had to wipe off a bit of drool however...
There was a healthy turn out of '70's Beetles at the show and no I will not call them all "fat-chicks". I will reserve that word for Superbeetles however due to their pregnant nature...
Ok and can freely admit it. This is the only VW model made that I can honestly say looks way better low and one nice rims. The type 3 Ghia was always a car that people had strong opinions about. This '68 looks great as shown.
Dash was unique to this model as well as most other parts...
I did have to laugh at the rear trunk however... Was so shallow it likely could only hold a couple of stacked pizzas. Mmmm, Pizza.
This '60 Beetle was a little beat up but still looked cool to me.
Slammed, rimmed, narrowed, vintage speed equipped, patina Oval seemed to catch the interest of many and it won a prize.
Next up is Jerry's 1960 Beetle. Jerry loved the road into the University with those nice raised covers rising above the pavement. Mark liked them too.
This '67 Beetle has a stunning paint job in a metallic tangerine type colour. Very nice detailing...
This green Beetle glowed in the daylight.
I think this was another '66... Some guys like the one piece windows. Others? not so much...
This '69 didn't look that interesting at first with its' faded paint and poorly painted rims. The inside told a different tale however...
That is an entirely original interior in excellent shape. Everything was original and nice. Odometer said 60,000 miles and it looked it too.
Engine was clean and original. Even still had the emissions gear still in place. The fuel filter police won't like what they see here however... This car was for sale but the asking price was way beyond top dollar. Try $7500! And yes it needed a full repaint and extensive detailing to be extra nice. Not long ago this was a $1500 car, tops.
One of many '67's at the show...
Another late '60's Beetle, a Zenith Blue example. Probably my favourite colour of that era.
Forgot to look at this cabriolet up close. Think it was a '58 or '59... Like the fatty whitewalls as usual...
If you like your Supers, then this in your face yellow example was for you...
How about an oval ragtop? Love the Canadian spec emblem on the back fender...
Now this was something special... A fully restored late model Le Grande Bug. The paint colour was very nice, as was the quality of finish.
The owner's photo album shows this was a rough car to start with too. You would never know that now...
Falling asleep now, to be continued tomorrow....
Ok, here is round two...
Here is a rare one. This is a 1967 Canadian Standard model. Note the lack of chrome around the windows and painted vent window frames.
The dash shot shows how plain these models are compared to the much more popular Deluxe version. Being a Canadian model it still features a gas heater however. That is the warning light above the speedometer.
This late bay sported Porsche-ish replica rims. Not a common sight on Bays.
Think I saw this early convertible around Nanaimo years ago... Or one that looked very similar to this.
Not much tire clearance on this SuperBeetle!
Part of the Strictly German car club (don't know anything about them), this was a slammed and narrowed '60 Beetle.
This splitty looked early to me with the pressed bumpers and bullet indicators.
A split bug for Tony. One of two, this one was earlier.
A '56 looking quite nice. You just know it wasn't a 36 hp under the decklid...
Brian checking out this slightly modified early bay panel.
Well maybe that Porsche flat six stuffed in the back was a little more than stock... Brian used to own a 1967 911S so he was likely a little misty-eyed...
I liked that the owner nicely integrated the Porsche instruments into the Bay Dash. This bus was featured in Ultra VW some time ago. Can't remember the owners name, but several of his cars have been magazine features...
Want to go rallying? Here is your ride.
Another slammed, narrowed patina Beetle. If these float your boat, there were many to choose from.
Still more to come...
The final batch...
Looks like a Dakota Beige late Westy to me. Rumour has it that Don's wife is patiently waiting for someone to finish hers like this...
For the next batch I passed of the camera to Brian while I bought some stuff from the swap meet. It seems Brian forgot his glasses and I think he kind of needed them...
There where a few Vanagons there, this is one of them...
Photobucket is causing me to have some fits tonight as it is not displaying the photos correctly. Hopefully they will link properly...
The above is an early bay Westfalia, rimmed and lowered...
Here is a splitty on Empi style five spokes...
This 23 window on Sprint Stars won it's class.
These are cool. Will we ever see the bay window version???
Normally I love whitewalls. But on a Doka? Meh...
A bit beat up, but obviously well loved...
Another early bay Westfalia. Kind of liked the rims on this one...
The picture quality is crappy, but the bus sure wasn't. This Westy was a very nice example.
Pretty sure it was a '70 in Neptune Blue. Don sobbed softly with delight...
Another splitty on polished five spokes. Brian liked this as it reminded him of one of his splitties he once owned. Being a hippy in the early '70's, he went through several busses like these and they were all dirt cheap. He also once owned a '58 Westfalia....
I liked the colour combo on this one...
Time to go off on yet another rant here... This is a 23 window Deluxe Microbus. It is also a rotten POS, missing tons of expensive parts and will require very large amounts of $ to restore it to any kind of half decent condition. The price? Why only $25,000!!!
I am sorry but that is a beyond stupid price for what you get... Splitties are a rich person's hobby now...
I somehow missed this one so I don't have anything to say....
One last batch to come...
Brian must have liked it, because he took more than one picture... Lots of new metal in this one...
Rob's hightop ready for the big trip to the interior...
And Brent is ready to go with him. Maybe we should call it the Coleman special... And where is Goldberg? He ALWAYS seems to end up in the pictures!
David had his very nice Vanagon Carat at the show and he probably watched it like a hawk so no scumbags could steal it again....
And there it is... Marks fantastic '57 that he and his Dad worked on like mad to get it to the show. This bus is RHD and built from a CKD kit in Australia. Very cool it was...
Love those tiny round lights and his add-on signal lights are pretty neat too. Was much admired throughout the day.
Don's 1975 Deluxe is in fantastic original condition. Brian drove it done and enjoyed it well.
Don's Riviera, hiding under the flag.
A shot of my '74 Restfalia and Reagh's '68 Double Cab. Reagh supplied the great tent. Lots of munchie carnage in the foreground...
This '63 ghia won best of show once again... This car was in a very bad state before restoration and features lots of custom made parts. Very well done and detailed...
Another Notchback in Savannah Beige, this one was quite nice. If I ever own a type 3, it would be the Notch...
A couple more early ragtops enjoying the sunny day...
Brian liked this 914, I think the colour suited it well... While walking across the field to see it, a bee stung Brian in the toe which probably didn't make his day....
And here is Brent making his early escape from the show to head off to do a serious road trip... You can just see Goldberg ready for another adventure...
On the way back we had several unscheduled stops to allow Mark's bus to cool down. One of them was at this picturesque viewpoint so it wasn't a bad thing....
A few more to go...
Near the Russell Farm north of Duncan. Mark is getting lots of "help" as he decides to remove his decklid.
VW's filled the pullout area... Note Don's swap meet booty filling the back of Reagh's Double.
A '70's invasion.. Damn it was hot in this area...
Mission accomplished. Mark and his Dad made it back to Nanaimo in one piece. Well maybe a few pieces... but they made it. Overall it was a great show and like last year, I blinked and it was all over. The Victoria club put on a great show as usual, and the weather was fantastic. Hopefully some of those who didn't show up will make it next time.... Yes this means you Frank! And Tony... and several others I can think off....
