I was parked in front of a farmer's market this afternoon, ready to leave I started the '74 bus and instantly became aware that it was running rough and wasn't going to idle. I thought it had to be either a dropped ignition wire or one of the vacuum elbows on either side of the engine. First thing I checked was the passenger side elbow and sure enough it was completely off, further inspection showed it was cracked at both ends. I think I replaced this one 7 years ago. I had a new one in the spares box but it turned out to be the one on the left below. The one I needed is the one on the right. A kind woman stopped to talk, mentioning how she had a bus years ago and would have to fix certain things like the vacuum elbows. She offered me some electrical tape, I thanked her as I already had a roll, but that suggestion made the difference. I was able to bind my cracked elbow and use a hose clamp on the worst end, and it worked, runs normally again. These elbows are fiddly things and sooner or later will come apart, this isn't the first time I've had one go and I'm sure I'm not alone. Has anyone ever made their own elbow? With the right type of hose and a few clamps I think you could do a better job. Also, where can I get one of these? The right hand side one. Thanks...

That right one is basically a boot from a spark plug wire end (non-VW). I am sure I have used them before for this purpose.

I just received a replacement rubber elbow from a reputable supplier and it's the short one on the left. Perhaps the spark plug like one is necessary as the metal pipe gets stretched back over the years. I will investigate further.
