Yes it was a great turn out with nice weather too. Special thanks must be given to the very generous door prize donations from Reagh, Don, Harbourview, and the Victoria Volkswagen club. Thanks to those that spent the time to organize this event and to Frank and Rona for providing the venue. And of course thanks to those who brought their VW's and made the show what it was! The turnout of air-cooled cars was great, and in total almost 30 VW's were registered. Pictures to follow...
Picture time...
First up, the best known VW in Nanaimo, the Frankmobile, 1963 Deluxe. Looks good with the BRM's!
Next up, my own 1966 Deluxe Sunroof. Was dead for over 25 years before it was restored quite awhile ago. Have owned around 14 years, uses engine from my first VW still rotting away in the back yard!
My 1962 Deluxe. Traded a restored 1967 Cougar for this that I owned for almost 20 years. The Beetle is Beryl Green and has travelled only 47,000 miles in it's life.
Here is Jerry's 1960 Beetle, a recent acquisition and very nice it is. SHINEY IS GOOD!
Remember this??? It was at the show today except it looks a little different!
Jerry has been busy in the last week... Would you believe it is the same car???
Cornell's 1974 Superbeetle was a very clean machine
Another 1974 Superbeetle, this time a convertible owned by Chris (Bow-Wow)'s daughter, Hayley.
It was very good to see Ron Fischer's 1965 Canadian Standard out and on the road. Congratulations, Ron at completing this project.
Now this was something special.... Rainer's innocent looking 1966 Standard may have looked relatively original but contained a surprise inside. How about a mid engine conversion with over 2.0 L's of displacement. Sounded pretty wild too!
Alana had her vibrant '71 Superbeetle out with the kids too and it looked great!
More to come...
Up next is Don's Bombardier built VW designed Iltis. Lots of fun off road...
Mark was able to bring down his 1971 Ghia convertible. For those that don't know, Mark's Ghia was originally from California, he bought it in the UK, and later shipped it back to BC!
The only other Ghia in attendance was Stan's nice '69, who travelled down island with his two boys.
Reagh brought the former Funbugz '66 down which was always a popular attraction parked outside his museum. Reagh also donated a PILE of door prize die-casts to the show today.
Here is Doug's 1979 Westfalia....
And of course here is Don's tin-top Riveria, a 1977 model in his favourite Neptune Blue. I got to drive this bus today, and very smooth it is. Don also donated some cool stuff for prizes including a popular radio controlled splitty!
This is Andrew's bus out of Victoria, a nice patina 1966 camper. Was much admired throughout the day. I didn't get a chance to take a photo of Greg's 1986 Westy with his two dogs, Camper and Diesel, before he left. Also missed Rory's 2012 Golf R which looked pretty mean.
Goldberg's "77 Westfalia tin-top looked great with his period camping plates and beans?!?. Didn't see much of that funny guy Brent that Goldberg seems to hang around with a lot!
I also brought the mighty '74 Restfalia.
Not sure what High-top Rob is doing with his bus here, but he seems to be enjoying it!
Still more to come...
Final batch...
It was nice to see Pat C from Port Alberni come down for the event. He brought his New Beetle, but is also building a dune buggy project.
Devin brought up his New New Beetle from Victoria. He also is working on a 1966 Beetle project.
And Tony brought his 1953 Zwitter to the event. Needs some fatter whitewalls!!! Just my opinion....
Gord(Twig) showed up a bit later with his wife's '62 (that is what he says...) This is one very nicely built VW.
Donavan showed up in his 1967 Beetle that was for sale. Naturally Jerry was there in .03 seconds!!!
I can't pronounce or spell the name of the woman who owned this bus who showed up at the very end of the event. (Don's note...she is Ziggy, short for something very German!! )
Also missed taking a picture of Terry's cross-Canada Dakota Beige Westy that showed up near the end of the event.
And finally here is a special picture... My lovely wife Rebecca decided after almost 18 years of driving her 1991 Tercel, it was time for a change. During the cruise-in I left with her to pick up her new wheels. A bit of a change to be driving a 2007 FJ Cruiser, from a lowly Tercel!!! No one was more surprised than me when she picked out this as her new vehicle! And before you ask she did NOT want a Volkswagen of her own!!!
Once again thanks to everyone who attended and those who made this event happen ! Thanks to all the out of town people who made the effort to come too!
