Ok here we go.... Pictures coming up for Nanaimo VW Club Cruise-In 2014!
First up is the first one there... Hightop Rob's 1973 hightop camper. Rob is currently living in his bus and enjoying the freedom! That is Brent beside it checking for calls from his hundreds of admirers.
Next up is Don's radio controlled Herbie. This is Mr. Bus' only Beetle that technically runs! Many were impressed but Goldberg was not... Incidentally the free version of photobucket is so overflowing with advertising that my adware software triggers constantly making for an irritating experience. So these photos are posted in order of being taken to preserve what remains of my sanity...
Next up is Reagh's 1968 Double Cab. Originally from Salt Spring Island, Reagh has owned it for years and is a low mileage example. Later served as a great table for displaying the door prizes too.
This is my 1962 Beetle with 47,000 original miles and original paint except the fenders. That original paint causes serious problems later on... In my ownership the car has been seldom driven and has not seen any rain at all. The crappy weather followed by a bit of sun left the original paint covered with hundreds of nasty water spots that are very difficult to remove. Rubbing compound is kind of working but given the paint is getting thin in places, I am not impressed. Does that mean I can never get the paint wet? Any ideas here?
Next up is Cornell's modified 1974 SuperBeetle. He was the first of the Victoria people to arrive.
Next up is the Jerry's 1960 Beetle. Check out the cool ventilators on the side windows.
A few water-coolers showed up. I talked with Cooper for a bit about his 1987 16 valve GTI. These things are always fun to drive and he enjoys his.
A few hot rodders showed up too. Eric owns this sweet Mustang Fastback. Eric is considering switching to our side and is thinking splitty buses!
Didn't get the guys name who owns this Super Bee. A bit different from a Super Beetle ain't it???
Also failed to figure out who owned this late model Golf as well.
Ahhh , back to the air-cooled classics again. A shot of the rear of Jerry's '60 Beetle. Wonder how the tires are doing at that camber?
The view that everyone loves and wishes they had. Tony's 1953 Beetle. Rumour has it he has been dreaming of buses lately too...
Looks good from the front too. Needs some fatter white-walls! Hint, hint, there Tony???
And of course the mighty Frankmobile. There is the great man himself checking out his stock 1200 in the back. Yah, right.....
Here is Tim's stock looking 1968 Beetle. Always liked this blue from that era of Beetle.
Mark and his Dad were there in his 1971 convertible. The two of them did a mad thrash to try and get his split bus to the show and almost made it!
Lots more to come...
Don's 1978 Riveria is his favourite in his extensive collection of bay window buses. He gets misty-eyed when someone whispers "Neptune Blue"... A very nicely preserved tin top Riviera.
This fantastic 1975 Deluxe bus is currently the property of Don's Mom. It previously belonged to Don's Uncle Bill, who took extremely good care of it throughout his life. Almost all original with only 70,000 miles on the odometer. First year of fuel injection too.
My own 1974 "Restfalia". A factory supplied Kombi, converted to Riviera camper when new, Westfalia interior installed decades later.... And a few mods like EFI 2 litre... This is the VW I drive the most by far...
Goldberg takes good care of his 1977 tin top Westfalia. That funny looking guy to the left helps him out sometimes too... Brent definitely loves his bus but another rumour has him dreaming of pop-tops!?!
My owner has all the fun and nobody pays attention to me... Oh, suuuuure!
Mmmm, more orange! This is Tom (Busaddict)'s 1973 Westfalia from Victoria. Tom's bus was owned by his Dad and was part of the family but as happens in life was later sold. Years later Tom found it again and bought it back! It has retained much of it's originality and is slowly being fixed up and is much loved.
Another from the Don collection... His 1985 Iltus (which I may have spelled wrong again....). Designed by VW, assembled by Bombardier, these military machines are a lot of fun. Apparently still used in parts of the globe too...
Hayley's 1959 Class 11 Beetle was a nice change from the norm and a fun looking project.
How is that for a dashboard? Ready to take on anything...
Even got the picnic basket for those trips beyond civilization...
This nice splitty camper came in a bit later. Was owned by "Harley" but if forgot to get the year..
Yoko the dog wasn't that interested in the VW's, but she is still young. Owned by my Insurance provider. And I am in their office so much it is sort of like when Norm from Cheers walks in...
More to come...
Stan made the trip down island in his 1969 Ghia. You really can't go wrong with one of these.. and his is a very nice example.
Mitch and Sandra's vibrant red 1967 was looking radiant when the sun popped out.
And here is Terry's (Stude) 1965 Beetle. Terry very generously donated to me some nice Hazet tools to help me with my projects. I was at a loss for words and appreciate this a lot. He is someone who subscribes to the "pay it forward" and help others out when they need it. That is great logic and great karma as well and is something I also believe in. Thanks a lot Terry and yourself and others will be assisted when needed too!
It was nice to see Doug's minty green 1979 Westfalia.
The interior looked nice with its chequered flooring and custom seat upholstery too. In my opinion, the camping layout in the late Westfalia's is the best design. But then I might be biased...
It is my old bus! Fully redone by its current owner (Jon), and what a nice job he has made of it too!
It is the infamous French bus. I bought this from the long term owner who emigrated from France to Canada, some years back. He owned the bus for years and had many good times camping in it around Europe. I was intending to restore it to original, but life got it in the way and all I did was rebuild the motor and some basic mechanical work. The next owner did the usual slamming and rimming thing and installed a hot motor and did some fake patina. Jon has put his own stamp on things however...
Look at this beautiful interior! Lots of fine wood work and custom features here
Check out the overhead storage with the inset VW symbols. Very nice! The owner did a lot of serious body work to save this bus including replacing the rotten floor among other things. He also reinstalled the stock motor which made me kind of happy....
It was nice to see Chris show up in his 1972 Westfalia.
Another pic of Terry's 1965 Beetle. I have always liked this shade of Green from this era.
Still more to come...
Next up is Don's (edit by PICTUP...not me!)1964 slammed Ruby Red Beetle. I am well known to not being a patina person, but I always have liked this Beetle.
This is Darrel's 1966 Beetle that sure looks like one of the Canadian Custom models to me. Pearl white always looks great on a Beetle and the five spokes do it for me.
Don and Donna's 1967 Notchback is often the only Type 3 seen at many events. Always my favourite model for the type 3, and they are nice to drive. Love the dashboard design.
This is Dean's fantastically original 1973 Beetle. I have driven this one a couple of times and love it! It has been in Dean's family since new and is nice to see such a well maintained VW.
The engine found in Dean's 1973. Can you say original? Sure you can...
If you are into Audi cars, then a TT is a good choice. Les had a nice looking version here.
Then the monsoon came. Managed to get a shot of the "tiny" muffler on Mitchey's Beetle.
Frank was smitten by the eyelashes on Beth's 1984 Westfalia.
Angela showed up in her '78 Westy complete with Porsche teledials. I think she said it was bought for her kid, but secretly I doubt that!!!
Here is a shot of swag given away from the back of Reagh's Double cab. He had the right idea being under the tent when the rains came!
Andy showed up with his 82 and 87 Cabriolets. Both for sale if they appealed to you...
I never did find out who owned this dune buggy. Looked cool sitting there.
How many of you actually remember the Speed Buggy cartoon? I do and even have a comic book some where. If I remember right, it was like Scooby-Doo with a talking dune buggy instead of a dog...
And here is my '72 Dorper camper looking sad in the rain that plagued throughout the event.
Another shot of Don's two buses. The passenger bus came in handy as a refuge for the worst of the rains!
Here is an inside shot of Don's Riviera camper. Everything you see in there is original!
Here is an inside shot of my Restfalia. Brent donated the era correct placemats to the cause... Little splitty buses full of candy seem to appear out of nowhere and I think Brent may have had something to do with that....
My Dad and Mom showed up later in their 1956 Thunderbird. He said he should be allowed to enter the show due to the VW part he used in the construction of his hot rod.
Can you spot the VW part in the interior picture?
Jim and Diane showed up near the end of the event in their 1971 Convertible. Not good convertible weather unfortunately.
It was nice to see Hawthornes' splitty but out for a cruise.
This late model Westfalia is in fantastic shape and mostly original paint. The owner has had it for some time and looks after it very well.
Check out the original badging still on the back. Is that cool or what?
And finally, no I don't want a Ford Fiesta. But I do want that colour! For my long term restore of my first car. My loooong suffering '70 Beetle would look great in that colour with its slotted mags, T-bars, and S&S header style exhaust!!!! I really hope to do that someday...
Again thanks to everyone for coming out to this event and braving the at times crappy weather. We had 33 VW's register for the event as well as several more that showed up later. Given the weather we can call this a fantastic turn out and hope to do it again next year! Thanks to those who supplied door prizes, those who provided their time to organize this event, and RONA for supplying their site. Have a great summer everyone!
