One more pic... Kid finally got to drive the beast. Have passed the 500 km mark without blowing up yet, so hopefully it will survive the winter. Love those heated seats! Getting soft in my old age...

Sooo, I just received this letter in the mail... Wow, my first recall notice ever! Funny how it only took Honda/Acura almost 16 YEARS to recall the car for faulty airbags that if deployed, might fill your face with metal fragments. Nice. And keep in mind Honda (and other manufacturers) are only recalling these cars because the government run Transport Canada is making them do it. My Acura's airbags are not currently working anyway, because the seat belt buckle has a faulty electrical switch inside of it which is an input signal to the SRS (supplemental restraint system) computer. In the USA, Honda was forced to issue a recall for this because it was considered an important safety feature. Transport Canada did not require Honda Canada to do it, so Honda chose not to. Because after all, making money is much more important than caring about the safety of your product, right??? Incidentally, in the USA, Honda had to replace inner door release handles due to the cheapo chrome peeling off the plastic underneath. This was not about cosmetics, but safety due to the fact the peeling chrome is razor sharp and will happily cut your finger when operating the handle. Again Honda Canada was not required by law to replace these, so they refused to do anything about it. The Acura suffers from this problem as well... For me the nearest Acura dealership is in Victoria, so getting the airbags replaced will be a pain in the butt anyway. I also have to wonder how careful the technicians there will be when working on some crappy 16 year old Civic clone with 404,000 km on it, instead of a new NSX...

Stopped by the local Honda dealership today. For this recall, they are authorized to replace the airbags instead of having to go to Victoria to the Acura dealership. While there I inquired what a seat belt buckle assembly would cost to make the airbag system work again. How about a list price of $391??? That ain't going to happen now is it? As previously mentioned, in the USA this is also a free fix...

Just that exploding airbag in the triangle creeps me out. If you ever get it totally fixed I'm still gonna have to wear my safety glasses if I ever drive with you in that car.

We had to threaten the manager of the toyota dealership that we were going to park our corolla in front of the front doors and call a reporter from the victoria paper if they didn't replace the faulty passenger side airbag ignitor if they didn't replace it immediately. They did.
This was months after learning of the recall, and weeks after contacting them to see if they would replace it, and when all we got was "you're on the list and when we get the necessary parts we'll notify you" excuses. I kind of feel bad that maybe someone els's part got put into our car......nah, I don't. Stan

So this is what graced the local Honda dealership showroom... The brand new 2018 Civic Type R. These cars include pretty much everything as standard that the boy-racer crowd would normally add to their machines... That 2.0L produces 306 hp at 6500 rpm and is both turbocharged and direct injected. This sign under the hood made me laugh. More like wet dreams for some... Now that is a wing! Styling is not subtle in any way... The interior was pretty radical including racing style seats. Liked the red accents everywhere. Would you like to own it? Fork over $42,000 plus tax and drive it away! For comparison purposes, the fancy Accord sedan parked next to it was only $38,000... Pretty sure this car is NOT going to be available for test drives to the average person. I hate to admit I still liked it and if I win the lottery it WILL be mine. That and a Corvair...

Sooo, the Acura's new airbags are now fully operational. Did I fork out the $391 for a new buckle? Fat chance. Did I fork out less for a used one? Nope. Did I creatively bypass the buckle switch? Maybe... Actually once I found a wiring diagram, it became obvious that all I needed to do was disconnect the plug for the buckle, and stick a small cotter pin between two terminals of the plug. The computer then interprets this as the seat belt being buckled all the time, so will allow operation of the airbags. And finally that nasty light is no longer glowing on the dash and annoying me...

that nasty light is no longer glowing on the dash and annoying me... Wait, WTF you mean all cars don't have a nasty orange light in the shape of an engine shining brightly beside the odometer? ? Our Corolla does, I though it meant the engine was still working??? Stan
