Just found out this swap meet is this Sunday at Parksville in the curling rink building near the water. The same location as the Parksville car show each year... I have usually found something to buy each time, but you have to get there early before Rob and Reagh clean everything out!!

With vendors getting early access, I wonder what their mark-up is gonna be for us on all the VW related stuff? Better bring my trade items

Sooo, it was a great day at the swap meet, and I was more than pleased with the goodies I came home with. Jason scored what looked to be a '60's German Beetle bumper within seconds of being there! Reagh and Rob were doing more selling then buying, and Rob scored a nice built model Beetle which I later managed to get from him (Thanks, Rob, I owe you one). Reagh had a variety of both parts and toys for sale, and I couldn't resist taking home an older German Beetle muffler for future use. Don purchased a nice looking stud welder for pulling dents, and a portable air tank for inflating tires. Saw Stan briefly, but don't know if he bought anything. Darren also was there and bought some goodies including an old headlight assembly suitable for those "cyclops" style lights mounted to the roof of split buses, and some kind of motorbike, although I didn't see it. I ended up buying a large stash of VW literature and a few other unique items. Pictures will be up tomorrow... Overall a great day and this swap meet seems to get better each year!

It certainly was one of the better swaps in recent memory there. The set-up was great, the weather perfect, and lots of people having a good time yakking it up. I am looking forward to popping some rocker dents outta my Single Cab(amongst other things ). One event conncerning a man and his car keys happened at the very start that will, I am sure, be retold over time, but after that everything went very smoothly.

Had some internet issues last night, but the seem resolved at the moment...
First VW related item I saw on entering was this nice Ghia convertible, and it was for sale too. The asking price was, uh, rather robust shall we say at $35,000! Never actually saw the owner or had a good look at it, but was told later it was a converted auto-stick car...
Next up was Reagh manning his table of VW goodness for sale. Rob was scouting out stuff to buy at the time...
Continued later tonight...

So it was off to the inside tables... As this was not a VW swap meet, you have to wade through a lot of American car parts, but sometimes you can find some gold... A guy who had a lot of Chrysler literature, had a pile of VW stuff, and it was all good! This was quite a nice 1966 dealer Type 3 brochure that featured all the different models (not Type 34, sorry Rob.) Also in the stash was two different 1967 Beetle brochures. Lots of interesting pictures within. A 1961 issue of Foreign Car Guide contains an article of how to get rid of those "idiot sticks" off your Beetle and install some "modern" signals. Yes they were talking about throwing away your semaphores!!! The winter accessories catalogue was nice as well and included dealer installed Perfection gas heaters. Another catalogue featured popular accessories and was issued by Alberni Volkswagen. And how about this dealer supplied roof rack? Kinda ugly but probably practical. The other item is an advertisement that originally would have hung from the rear view mirror. More...

How about a 1977 Canadian Westfalia brochure? Not shown is a Vanagon brochure featuring all versions sold here. And I couldn't resist a couple of more Bentleys, both the early ones with the coloured wiring diagrams. You might hate me when I tell you all the previous literature and the green Bentleys cost a wallet busting $20! I did go back to the same guy later, to see if he had some other goodies that I might have missed. And he did! Don spotted this first, and said I needed to buy it. And I did need it. This cost more than $20, but also included some literature I missed the first time. I had never seen this brand of VW toy before, but Reagh immediately identified it as "Midge Toys". These were surprisingly made in the USA and are a bit crude. The Beetles appear to be about 1964 versions, but this package clearly states these were produced in 1975. The "BugPak" artwork is very of the period. Wonder why someone bought this, and then never played with them? Rob actually spotted this first and bought it. I managed to wheedle it out of him later... It is a 1/32 scale model 1962 Beetle, likely marketed by MPC but was probably produced by Airfix. Maybe I should paint it Beryl Green??? The red Beetle is likely a Revell product, and is a 1968 version. Both these are cleanly built kits. They don't normally have much value, but were definitely worth the $2 each. Couldn't help myself, and bought a '67 Cougar too! Again not a VW, but the same guy selling the $2 models, also had this very large '69 Chevrolet Truck catalogue. The one on the cover is just what my own truck looked like when my Dad bought it back in '69. Couldn't leave that there, could I??? And finally, I bought this economy/vacuum gauge from a friend. NOS in the box, this is from the '70's. I still use a dwell meter and vacuum test gauge from this company, and the quality is decent. Won't likely ever use this find, but hey it was cheap! Overall this years haul was certainly my best ever, and am glad I went! Won't miss it again next year...

Wow! That is a dream swap meet, and it wasn't even VW specific! This annual automotive swap meet is coming up June 25th, 2017 at the Saanich Fair Grounds. Rarely see anything at all VW related, mostly American stuff and it's 2 bucks to get in. victoria.vccc.com/Swapmeet/2017-Poster.pdf

I have only been to that Saanich swap meet once about 20 years ago. That is where I scored the steering wheel that years later ended up on my Ghia. So it was definitely worth it...

Put that "Gas Saver" gauge on your truck....you won't ever drive it again, lol! Nope, no repaint because that 62 Beetle is it's stock(MPC) colour . Besides, that Beryl Green paint might change shade when put on plastic. Tom, as Russ has demonstrated, and I am sure you know, sometimes the best deals are found in "hot rodders'" piles-o-stuff when they don't even realize what they have. It is the VW specific swaps where prices skyrocket. So get out there, have a look around, find the deals, and post up what you find!

It's that time once again! This year it is being held at the Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Centre. Always a fun place to peruse and get a breakfast and/or lunch. See you there!
