Thanks Mitch. Unfortunately at this time I have no idea as to what heads are on it. The intake is a single Holley carb("Bugspray" Reagh called it). Exhaust is an extractor with QP but I am planning on going to a Vintage Speed for greater HP engines and hopefully a bit quieter(throatier?).

if you pop a cover and look behind the rockers you should see some identifying numbers. bug sprays were really the best offroad carbs (back in the day!)but duals are so much more superior. be careful with that exhaust choice( big tuning issues with that one.

if you pop a cover and look behind the rockers you should see some identifying numbers. I will have a look soon. bug sprays were really the best offroad carbs (back in the day!)but duals are so much more superior. I was thinking I would go to duals, but once I said that, there were some saying the single is much easier and reliable out in the dirt. In your experience, what would duals do for me? I did have a recommendation from Jeff Lain from the Kaddie Shack that I should go to HPMX carb(supplied by him of course ) . be careful with that exhaust choice( big tuning issues with that one. I haven't read about tuning issues in the Type 3 forums. What have your heard/read? What would you recommend otherwise? Choices seem to be limited...

play with the bug spray for a while(nostalgia baby). i just bought a set of 40idf clones for the buggy but haven't got to them yet. wish i held off as the dellorto clones have finally been released and that is what i would recommend to you (36mm).dells have more progression holes, better float control, outflow and are easier to tune than webers. IMO. the reason why the extractor will always out perform the vintage speed is the same reason why dual carbs provide such great improvements over single carbs....airflow. the canister type muffler (stock or vintage speed) is a compromise for noise abatement and flow, the extractor style is designed for flow with considerations for the firing order, cam overlap, etc. cut a canister muffler open and you will see a couple of tubes and baffles, its just a can that fills up with exhaust until it comes out the peashooters. the reason why it can become a tuning issue is at certain loads, rpms and back pressure levels a reversion is created with the resulting dip in the torque curve that cant be tuned around, the intake charge is affected the motor gets dizzy and runs stupid. I'm not saying it wont work, just not as happy as it could be. if you spend the time and money to give your baby a single, isolated venturi for each cylinder(dual 2 bbl carbs) it makes sense to keep the exhaust isolated until expelled.(for best power).

Looks like I should rethink my former plans then. Thanks Mitch! I am new to anything but stock, so I will apologize in advance for the barrage of stupid questions sure to happen when the time comes With so many "tuck" exhausts out there for the Type 1s, it is too bad there isn't the choice in the Type 3s. Not many want to Baja a Type 3, most want to slam them and that is where a stock style exhaust wins the day. I wish there was a header/extractor for the Type 3 out there that didn't hang so low... The solution might be to find an old Over The Top(apparently the new OTTs suck) or an old Cyclone(old, old skool). More hunting

When you get your carbs Mitch, I've got a handful of jets you can play with. It'll be so nice to switch them out on the buggy. And if anyone else is a gear head, the best line from any hot rod movie EVER......."gotta check the jets". Gonna watch that again this weekend. Lol. GOTTA CHECK THE JETS!!!!!

I wanna see a picture of that model! Used to be into plastic kits at one time. Dad told me I wouldn't do that anymore once the real cars came along. He was right...
