I do that myself all the time. It helps this time of year to take your 5 lb tank indoors until it's warmed up to room temp and leave the smaller 1 lb one outside to cool off. Then take the 5 lb tank outside, hook it up and let it drain for a few minutes. Then pull up on the release valve until you get white spray. If you have a digital scale you can weigh a new 1 lb tank and compare the refilled one to that weight. It is the only way you can figure out how much you have in it. I always spray my 1 lb tank top with a water + soap mixture to maker sure there are no bubbles coming from the pressure release valve. I found one a few years ago that was leaking a tiny bit. I emptied it and disposed of it. Stan

Don't know if I'd want to get involved doing this, but it is a neat concept.
Do you use needle nose pliers or the valve tool, Stan?

Hey, no problem, then next time you empty a 1Lb green bottle, save it for me. Yes I use needle nose plyers, I've also just used the warm bottle vs cold bottle method and lots of time to approximate a full bottle.. Stan

You guys have crested the hill of the cheapest bunch of people I have ever met. It was currently held by a person who would take their own tea bag to a coffee shop and just ask for a cup of hot water.

I went to Mrs. Riches a few days ago. My Swiss Alps burger lasted me through FOUR separate meals. Drove my truck 24 years on the same set of brakes. Trans fluid on same truck was last replaced in 1982. Never have bought ANY new furniture in my life (except beds). Would still happily be driving my first VW if it had not rusted away. Rust was only reason parked after 17 winters of use by me and 32 in total. Downstairs fridge is only 65 years old. Microwave is only 37 years old. Stove is less then two years old and is worse POS then the 35+ year old model it replaced... Vice in basement is 100 plus. Anything else???

You're my hero! Is your microwave the kind with the fake woodgrain or the real wood trim?

You guys have crested the hill of the cheapest bunch of people I have ever met. It was currently held by a person who would take their own tea bag to a coffee shop and just ask for a cup of hot water. In defense of this particular topic, in my mind it doesn't just come down to cheapness. Most of us have become numb/blind to the wastefulness of our society and instead of these smaller bottles helping to fill our garbage dumps (yes dumps, not so-called "sanitary landfills") they instead can be reused for their original function in an efficient manner. We as a species have come a long way from living in caves, however the way in which we conduct our lives hasn't. At some point it's gonna bite us in our collective ass unless we start to steer the ship around. It has been shown that even on a personal level this helps in this cause. Millions of people walk this planet, with more on the way, so do the math. The shit I have been forced to throw out during this one small house renovation has turned my stomach, but I have tried in my own little way to reduce/reuse/repurpose/recycle. It doesn't give me a clear conscience by any means, but it is the only way I don't go completely crazed(however some might say otherwise and point out all things are relative and I have crossed well beyond that line ). I realize now I should probably be posting this in the rants section....

You're my hero! Is your microwave the kind with the fake woodgrain or the real wood trim? Genuine fake woodgrain! This Panasonic Dimension 3 is "microprocessor controlled" baby! None of those old mechanical knobs like your crappy Amana Radar Range! Some other examples of being "economical". I have three battery chargers; one which I bought new a few years ago. It has modern controls and features to prevent overcharging and can do both 6, 12 volt, and boost functions. And it is an unreliable piece of crap. If it thinks the battery is too dead, it won't even try to charge it. My Dad's old low amp charger has no features whatsoever, but always eventually does the job. Did I mention it was free? But for those tough batteries that don't want to play, I drag out the Bad Boy. The Auto-Equip Tru-Charge "100" is a professional shop grade battery charger from the 1950's with pushbutton charging selector. Is your battery being a wussy and doesn't want to work anymore? Give it a 100 amp shot and that will smarten it up! I forked over real dough for this unit, and was likely the best $50 I ever spent... Who needs new crapola...

They will give you a mug of hot water for free, you can then use the instant decalf pouch by starbucks to have a good cup of coffee. They know I'm doing it, they just hope I will buy lots of donuts. They don't know I avoid wheat so they're out of luck. Stan

Kudos to the people like myself who say what they mean and mean what they say when it comes to recycling, re-using and re purposing. I've been doing that all my life having grown up on a farm where you had to do that kind of stuff. My claim to fame is always coming home from the old fashioned dumps (not these woosy transfer station things) with more and better stuff than I took there. Stan

Back in the day you were allowed to take anything home from the city dump. They had a big scrap metal pile there, and right on top was a 1966 Beetle body. I went home for my toolbox and helped myself to as many parts as I could remove, and many of them found their way into my restored '66 Beetle project. Those were the days... And I think Mr. Camplug just likes disturbing the poo poo.

I used to work at the Cedar dump back in about '75 directing traffic to drive right to the back of the garbage pile or they would just drop it in the middle of the road at the entrance ,MORONS!!!!!!!!! I got $2/hr. and I made about $5-6 collecting good junk and selling it at the auction , that was probably the richest I ever was! haha
