Hey Russ, my old one's don't seem to be moving, at least on one side. These units were saved in 2010 when I resurrected the bus. Does "clocking" mean lining up the indentations? Where can I get new calipers? Otherwise, I see rebuild kits online, are they difficult to rebuild?

The most common problem with calipers is seized pistons. They can be removed as per Don's thread above. As long as the pistons clean up without excessive pitting, the calipers are usually good to go again. We even occasionally have used heat to free a real stuck piston... The rebuild kits include dust boots, and square-cut internal seals which is all you need for most situations... I would always try to recondition what you have before attempting to order replacements...

Funny I don't remember that, but I should, very informative, thanks. And Russ, I'm a bit nervous to rebuild my own.

Yes, it must be done. The Only air compressor I have is a little Black and Decker 120 PSI unit for tires. Anyway, Russ's tip about rebuilding and Don's post on the '78, very enlightening. I will probably post my progress here. Any recommendations as to where to order the rebuild kit?

I'd be worried about returning them to the U.S. if them if there was a problem, but the Bus Depot is selling "Brand New, OEM Volkswagen. Impossible to find, and no core deposit!" for USD $99.95 www.busdepot.com/211615108

I think I have a fairly serious problem. I removed the passenger side caliper today. The hard-line came off no problem as did the lower retaining bolt...but the upper locating bolt seems like it might have been cross threaded or something as it pretty much ruined the threads. To make it worse, I tried to see if the other locating bolt would still go in and messed up the beginning of the threads so it won't go in the other side. While new bolts shouldn't be too difficult to find, though I can't find any online so far, the thread on the van is a predicament. Can it be sleeved, bored, re-threaded with a helicoil perhaps? Help!

I think this is what I will have to do:

Also, a question. Since this is the later Bay dual bleeder screw caliper, would the locator bolt go at the top?

There has been some concern on the Samba about German Supply in the last little while. Something about not responding to e-mails... With regards to which caliper fits what side: the style with two bleeders can be fitted to either side in terms of the casting. The position of the cutouts in the pistons will determine which side it was installed on. If you are going to fully rebuild them, then it does not matter which side you put it on as long as you orient the cutouts correctly. Bentley does show this, but you really need those original style thin shims on hand to determine exact location. Bad luck on that thread in the spindle...
EDIT. Does that CIP price ever look like a RIPOFF!

Are you ATE or Girling? I keep both sets of rebuild kits in stock. Girling - $20/kit. (Made by FAG) ATE - $35/kit. (OE VW)
