" Tinkering" ?.....considering his attention to detail on the fastback, the dream squareback will be tying up the shop for a very long time haha. Don't be surprised if this ends up as the best looking/driving type 3 on the island.

Rob is also helping me refresh some worn out items on the 68 doublecab. Engine got pulled to check main seal for leaks, but it turned out to be pushrod tubes and valve cover gaskets. Replaced the worn clutch and throw out bearing (only lasted 55 years)or(55,000 miles)...go figure eh! Noticed the driver side axle boots (original) were both cracked and gaping. dug out 2 new Taiwanese replacements from nos shelf, and got them installed. Will tidy up the engine bay before putting it all back together...then ready for summer cruising. Some pictures may follow depending on failing memory. Cheers

Engine back in and running smoothly and clutch working the way it's supposed to. Cleaned up some engine bay rust, then sealed with blue steal converter and dusted with the last of the green spray bomb. Unfortunately not enough paint to do the apron...so that will get done later. Now just need to tidy up the rear bumper and install the factory tow hitch, in case we wanna tow bar the Manx to our summer show. Then it will be time to clean up shop for Rob to paint his Fastback fenders, and get them installed.

I have gotten a good start on the squareback, raising it up to stock. Hhahahahaa except I raised the rear one notch to many so I have to do it all over again lowering it one notch, I raised it 2 all round

It's all back to " correct" Rob stance. Just like his other squareback was. Now to get the Rivieras on.

Ok a question for all you engine guys, how difficult is it to remove exhaust studs from a 1600? I know with bus engines it's a nightmare because they usually break off and I have to try and tap and drill so is it the same for beetle style 1600's

They can break off as well... Helicoils are your friend... Hope you are feeling better, too!

Quite often they leave a stub I have grabbed with vise grips and get out sometimes when you knows it is going to break you chisel the nut off and save the stud I was lazy just last week and broke one I should have chiseled but hammered and broke there is a good stub left and I plan to weld a nut on it and remove it that thick works well on broke fender bolts also.
