So that is pretty much perfect then... Range is technically 0.0027"-0.0051". Nice.

And to those that that weren't there, this had nothing to the classic "pull my finger".... Nor did it have anything to do with finder pointing, but it is used here to good effect. Here Brett is pointing to an arrow on the top of the piston. Each piston has one and they all must point to the flywheel end of the engine. While those in-the-know were looking at Brett's engine, they noticed that the deflector tins weren't quite snapped up into place. Unfortunately Brett had already put the heads on. However, being that he is using spring loaded push rod tubes and hadn't torqued down the heads yet, removing the heads, after reluctantly succumbing to VW meeting peer pressure, was a quick job. Here is what the engine looked like tilted on its flywheel with the tin hard against the pushrod tubes. When properly clicked in, this is how they are supposed to look. The right side was a bit trickier, what with that nut in the way, but Boris had the magic touch. Get it around the nut first, then click it into place.

So still battling this motor I have had second and third thoughts about the measurements i am getting and the results .
So i ordered 3 x OL30 mm shims = 90 or so I thought. Turns out that when you stack three together they measure 80 mm
What ! So i have 90mm end play …. -5 to be right @ 85
With two old shims and one new one i can get it down to 78 +5 = 83 !
Just an update while i still look , i guess down into the USA for some shims .

I thought you already had that endplay nailed down? What made you reconsider??? You shoulda seen the endplay on a customer's Beetle this week. I should have taken a video. Betcha it was 5mm or more! Clunky-clunkaroo! Ran and drove just fine however...

You know yourself when you take something apart to fix it … i guess im just too fussy , but never having done a bottom end before i like to think i am getting it right . I have the endplay down to .008mm slack … With a new 2x .0032 mm shims , i can get another .004 mm taken up and get it down to just 4 mm and in spec . Someone said ( if its too tight it just wont turn ) I don’t know whether to leave it at 8 mm or change it …….

I'm so confused by the measurements being tossed around. Proper end play is 0.003 to 0.0005 inches. That's three to five thousandths of an inch. That's 0.0762 to 0.127 mm.
