Next up are the seats. Had some problems with breakage on some pieces. Luckily I was able to get two good backs and two good seats Broken spring and frame Seat bottom on, the top will be the tough one, but I ran out of time today. Plaid material came from actual Westy cushions that had one bad side and one good side. Generally the bad side was the facing side so they couldn't really be salvaged. But they yielded some nice material that matches the seats and beds in the rear of the Westfalia. The vinyl is new and my upholsterer did a fine job of making proper piping. To my knowledge, the kits you can get for these seats don't have piping like the originals.

That would be a $2,000 job for the pair in some shops. Your craftsmanship is amazing!

That would be a $2,000 job for the pair in some shops. Your craftsmanship is amazing! Can confirm toms estimate. I dropped my seats off today Those seats look great! Holy crap! These will be in at less than half that. I am going broke doing this job because my overhead is so high…and my boat sits. It was a bit of a dumb decision, but I am learning and reestablishing some of my forgotten skills. Maybe it's all good, I just haven't decided Here is the seat finished and installed. I got the other done up to getting the headrest on today. I had to paint the door vent window frames, and Laurie had to go to orchestra early so I ran out of time. Kudos to my upholsterer though. She pointed out the necessity of matching the plaid top and bottom so the coloured plaid lines run with each other. It was a very good call!! We had to use more material than I had wanted, but I am glad she insisted!

I don't think Volkswagen or Westfalia ever imagined these interiors would be being restored more than three and a half decades on. I meant to comment on this before…Yes Tom, one wonders if they ever thought their collaborative efforts would have been appreciated enough in the future to warrant more lovin' ….. Finally got to riveting the vent windows today. Well, if I can call it riveting. Usually riveting requires a tool but these rivets aren't the same as the usual "pop" rivets. These ones instead have a hollow end that must be rolled over in some way if you don't have the fancy tool. I was hoping Russ might have one squirrelled away at Bavarian, but no such luck. Maybe body shops have them, but I figured I could probably make do for just 2 rivets… Here are the rivet and washer in place From underneath it looks like this I used a centre punch to start the flare And various punches to finish it off. Not the prettiest, but I doubt anyone is going to really scrutinize it Tools used No pic of the solid lump of steel I used to back the rivet up with. I can say it was a bit tricky to balance the rivet head on the block while punching the bottom end…..
