Russ really got me looking into this. Here are highlights from an interesting article in the Globe and Mail from as far back as 2012! Gasoline suppliers overcomplying with ethanol content rules (Globe and Mail, May 21, 2012) www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/energy-and-resources/gasoline-suppliers-overcomplying-with-ethanol-content-rules/article4197860/"Federal law forces oil companies to sell gasoline in Canada with an ethanol content of 5 per cent, but the industry is going one better. Oil refiners like ethanol so much, they’ve quietly begun selling gasoline with substantially more of the additive... ...the additive cuts car mileage by a few percentage points because it contains less energy than a similar volume of refined gasoline.... ..Although the industry and federal government don’t release figures on the national average ethanol content of gasoline in Canada, observers say it is likely around 6.5 per cent... ...the industry is buying ethanol in the U.S. at the wholesale price and selling it in Canada at retail gasoline prices, “which is fantastic” for them... ...Newfoundland and Labrador is exempt from the federal rule, but Manitoba and Saskatchewan have introduced separate requirements for more, at 8.5 and 7.5 per cent, respectively. Bigger markets, such as Ontario and British Columbia, match the national requirement... ...Jon Harding, a spokesman for Imperial Oil Ltd., said the company’s gasoline contains up to 10 per cent..."

So I dropped in to my local Chevron today, and sure enough there was a label on the 87/89/91 side of the pump that read "May contain up to 10% ethanol." It didn't look new, has that been there all the time? At least they have labeled the 94 pump as having no ethanol. I'm thinking if you're going to park it long term you should probably put some 94 in your air-cooled bus or bug.

Our local Chevron pumps never had the stickers before. They were certainly new. I have not been back since...

I just tried to order a carb' linkage from Gene Berg. Customer service was great, but then I asked how much it would cost to ship it to Canada. $59 USD was the answer. That's $78 CAD and it's completely nuts! The part itself was only $177 US. Then I'd have to pay border fees and the inevitable taxes. They sell really nice stuff, but it just isn't worth it at that price point. It's not their fault - they just lost a sale because of it. So now I need to find a good quality inferior part instead, or wait until I am visiting the States later in the year to have it shipped to me down there.

EMPI. Just mentioning the word raises eyebrows in the VW scene. Not even a year ago I bought some new rims for the wife's car (Chrome 5 spoke). When I got them home and unboxed them, one was not up to what I considered "quality finish). Returned it for a replacement, mounted some new skins and rolled the summer lookin good. So last week, the car cover comes off and rolled out of the shop for a quick detail. Then I noticed it.... The rims on the back side looks like a coating of sugar is on them. But it's not sugar, the Chrome has completely pitted and is starting to pit and flake on the outside finish as well. All 4, completely screwed. Contacted the shop I got them from and will hopefully get some response from EMPI early this week. What a drag. Stay tuned.

You might find this amusing. My student has returned home for the summer and left his car in my care until he comes back. The car is a 2015 Mustang with 9,800 km on it. I noticed that there is corrosion forming under the clear coat on one of the rims already... Maybe EMPI is building FORD parts now!

So here we go with my latest rant... This concerns a customer of ours and his experience with parts supplied from a well known Vancouver based company... He wanted to install a more powerful engine in his '69 Westfalia, and ordered a 1915 cc unit that was built by SCAT. After more than a few trials and tribulations, the engine is installed and running well. Then the oil leaks started... He has put approximately 250 miles on it, and is experiencing oil leaks from the rear main area, pushrod tubes, and even the strainer plate. Interesting things of note was no sign of any sealant on the pushrod tube seals, and nyloc nuts instead of the proper cap nuts on the oil strainer. The unfortunate part of this for the customer, is the supplier has no intention of giving the owner ANY form of labour compensation for these leaks and will not replace the engine. I talked to the company rep about the situation, and his answer was "all air-cooled engines leak oil, don't they?" He said he MIGHT supply replacement parts that are leaking. It was clear from talking to him he didn't really care about making this situation better. Too bad, so sad. Their advertisements for this engine say that they have sold several hundred of them and any small problem was easily resolved... Pants on fire...

At least the sales rep you dealt with will talk to you. My rim situation is going nowhere. Customer service is a joke. I wonder if us living on the island gives them the ability to brush us off because of the cost to return anything or the inability to actually deal with us face to face. I need a drink.

I clicked on a COOP ad that is promoting their new Top Tier Gasoline, no mention of ethanol, but a search of the Internet turned up this PDF that shows the ethanol percentage breakdown of their 3 grades of gasoline. Looks the same as Chevron. crs.coopconnection.ca/files/PetroSpecs-GASOLINE.pdf

I had suspicions about ethanol in CO-OP fuel. Just shows that the only way to get away from that crap is to buy the most expensive premium fuel. You know damn well the oil companies thought of that and gleefully wrung their greedy hands at the board meetings...
