Well I will get straight to the point... Chevron has decided to switch to ethanol laced fuels, and these are now in their tanks. DO NOT PUT THIS CRAP INTO THE TANKS OF YOUR VINTAGE VOLKSWAGENS!!! I am not talking about the ethics of using a potential food source to power our cars instead of feeding the world's hungry either... Ethanol is very well known to cause significant damage to the fuel systems in older vehicles. Go to the Samba and you can find MANY threads related to this. Ethanol happily rots fuel lines, eats carburetor accelerator pump/fuel pump diaphragms, as well as other rubber components of the fuel systems. Many VWs have caught fire because of these failures. If you are like me and have cars that sit for months without running, then ethanol will make things much worse. Ethanol in fuel draws in moisture which will happily corrode your fuel tank and metal lines. Chevron knows all this, and they also know that they are the most popular station for those with vintage cars/muscle cars/ hotrods. So in their wisdom, their very expensive Supreme 94 octane does NOT contain ethanol! How about that. If you still want the non-damaging fuel, you can buy it there for a SIGNIFICANT mark up. Well done, Chevron, you have permanently lost me as a customer...
Seriously, don't use ethanol based fuel in your vintage VWs... You have been warned...

So who does not use ethanol in their fuels? I may be wrong, but I believe Shell also uses ethanol? Also, how do you know whose fuel you are buying in the Nanaimo area anyway, when it is apparently all shipped into Departure Bay in one barge? I don't know of any other fuel depots in the area other than the Brechin facility. Does anyone know who this facility supplies and where the fuel originates?

Wow, thank you Russ! I had no idea, at least we have the option of using the 94 proof as expensive as it is. Do you know who has been using ethanol in Canada over the past decade? I was under the impression it was only used in the U.S. I have had fuel leaks over the years and now change my fuel lines every year or 2. Perhaps we can make a list of safe fuels for our Dubs.

Just convert those old beaters over to electric!..... It certainly would be cheaper if you did lots of miles! My bus hasn't gone far enough in the last ten years to even pay for the motor, never mind the batteries!

I am not sure about Shell. Locally in Nanaimo, the Co-op gas stations do not have ethanol in their fuels. That is what the guy that worked there said anyway... I think by law, pumps containing ethanol MUST have a sticker on them that says that. Certainly Chevron has slapped these stickers on all their pumps... Have ethanol in your fuel is not something to be proud of...
