so .......... after my "new" motor seems to be failing again, I've decided to pull it and take on the task of rebuilding it. I've diagnosed it as a worn cam, and have had other professionals agree with me. The builder denies that's the problem. Well, I guess I have to prove it and hopefully get compensated later I pulled the motor a couple weeks ago when it barely made it home and had a top rpm of 2500. When I drained the oil, my suspicions were confirmed, kinda. I really need to get the cam and see and measure it but check out what I found in the screen

I really wanted to pop in another motor to see and make sure all my components were operaing properly, but trying to find a motor turned out to be more difficult than I thought. I needed to start removing all the intake and exhaust, (in case I found a motor), and tear it down to long block. I had a couple lines on motors but had to wait to hear back from them. I decided while waiting, instead of going crazy, I'd strip, clean and repaint the tin ect, SO I set up some tables on the porch, and bingo bango bongo, we were in business. and now I need to figure out what color I'm going. Probably going to go stock, but blue might look good ........ also thought of just clear coating it, hmmmmmm, lol

Yesterday I brought the motor into the heated workshop. Its nice to be comfortable, have a parts washer handy, and I can watch TV at the same time Today, it was tear down time .... Looks like we have a lil head leakage seems to be a bit or should I say, a lot of carbon for 6000 miles Found more of that grunge in the oil pump too Oh well, i guess its time to remove the pistons, and get this thing ready to split and walla, I need help removing the fly wheel. I work on that tomorrow. Just a foot note. This is the furthest I have ever torn down a motor, From here on in, its gonna be all unchartered territory Im excited and scared shitless, but having fun

Not much to report. Had business to attend to today. Did pop into Bavarian today and got them to loosen my flywheel nuts.

So, this happened today And this is what was found ... The cam on the left was in the motor, the one on the right has very low mileage there's definately wear on all lobes, but check out that one, omg then there was the lifters. the exhaust were different from the intake? is that normal? they were diffferent heights, different sized oil holes, even different retainers and check out the wear ....these were on the same cylinder, the one with the facked lobe Ok gurus, time to chime in ......

OK, not a guru or a sherpa (never did like carrying heavy loads) but can't see what's in the pics. Maybe it's my old eyes, but they are very small and any attempt to blow them up results in lots of blurry squares. I gather it's been proven it's something wrong with the cam/lifters? Were they supposed to be new or did they put old ones in without making sure they were up to spec. Stan

Brent has a thread on TheSamba about this same issue. The pictures here are more clear... www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=708523We are hoping some of the big "gurus" on TheSamba will offer some insight as to what the lasting solution will be. My theory is that the first cam was crappy quality and failed in a very short time. I am suspicious that the builder installed a good VW cam the second time around, but suspect he may have reused at least some of the lifters that ran on the first cam. There were two different styles of lifters in his engine, and it is now not possible to determine if they were chamfered properly at the start. If the edges of the lifter were sharp (like they are now), they would happily scrape away the cam facings nicely... Only the builder knows for sure what he actually did...

I can see clearly now (sing it with me) in the samba pictures it looks like someone welded a claw hammer onto the cam on the right , just grind it off and you should be good to go!
