Someday I will get back into trying some sheet metal welding too. Goodness knows I have a few cars that could use some...

Lots of work to make those fenders into what you need! Must be satisfying, though. I really need to get better at that type of work.

What do you grind the welds with Terry? Do you do a little at a time, or keep a wet rag handy to cool it down? Do you hammer the welds to let the metal take its natural shape (with less stress)?

This is so cool. I'm enjoying watching the process. Makes me want to put away the bondo and learn how to do this work properly. I'm envious of your skill working with metal. My routine has been to use chicken wire and bondo. With a heavy dose of fibreglass and multiple levelling coats of primer. With a finished product that looks more like paper mache than body work.

Yes satisfying it took me eight years to do my 65 but now this year it has been 25 years that I have been driving it. Those fenders four and five are off that build they have zero rust and all the parts that I have ever taken off that build come apart like nothing every thing fit and even the bolts and nuts were greased. I think that is why the wheel flew off other than that it is a dream to work on.

What do you grind the welds with Terry? Do you do a little at a time, or keep a wet rag handy to cool it down? Do you hammer the welds to let the metal take its natural shape (with less stress)? These are the tools I used for the grinding pretty basic I like the guard on the grinder I use ear plugs and face shield kickbacks are real I set the job up with lots of light so you can see this weld clearly and grind into a backstop of some sort. I am using a wet towel and a sponge to catch all the sparks I like working from the inside it helps and needs less detailing no I did not hammer the welds there isn't enough time they cool too fast.I hammer the welds after I finish grinding I grind hard get my face right in there they get red hot but do not keep it that way to long as that create more heat than welding and cause warp just takes a second to let it cool enough to carry on sometimes I lean into the guard and use it as a guide and pivot off off it I have some ventilation happening.

So I paint some epoxy and then topped it with high build urethane primer so I could get a good look at the work just used a small paint brush 3 tablespoon of epoxy and 2 tablespoon of primer was all I needed for all the fenders. I then scuffed up the paint with a scotch brite type pad and applied some short stand fiberglass what they call kitty hair. This is how much I mixed. This is how much I used before it got hard. I used this as a base for filler because it is waterproof and flexible.

This is what that one looks like today it was enough to get the running board mounted and the car has been on the road now because of that.
