Every time I take a walk in the woods, you just know I am scanning the bush for vintage tin. And sometimes I even find it...
Don and I decided to check out this place behind the Bold Knight restaurant in Nanaimo. It is a river estuary and very wet and soggy. It was also a popular place to dump junk cars back in the 1950's. I remember seeing some remains over 30 years ago and decided to take a peek. The first picture shows the most intact car at this location...
Sitting in this location hasn't improved its condition. Saw it last year and it is amazing how far it has sunk into the ground. The distinctive rear window made this car not too hard to identify. My Dad new right away it was a Hudson Terraplane...
Likely a 1935 model, this is what it would have looked like long ago... Wanna fix er up???
Couldn't identify this remains of a cowl. There were lots of cowl sections of various car bodies lying around, all from the 1930's. Many of these cars were more visible 30 years ago. Many rocks and debris have been dumped on top of them over the years.
This pile contains the back panel of a small sedan. That tire indentation was common on several small European cars of the 30's. Maybe an early Fiat? These were once common as drag cars...
And looky what I found in yet another pile of rust. Does it look vaguely familiar???
Amazingly it opened up and is unbroken! Likely off the remains of a 30's British Ford, or similar. The body was wood framed on whatever this once belonged to. I may have liberated this... Some people get very bent out of shape if you take something like this from the woods. Considering my Dad and his friends "may" have put it there 60 years ago, I consider it long term storage... Dad says in the 50's, scrap metal was worthless and the wrecking yards would charge you to take a junker away. In that era, environmentalism was not even invented, and tossing your junk in the bush was quite acceptable. Dad once towed a body shell upside down in the snow to get it to a dumping site! The cops saw him do it to, and didn't care at all. How times have changed!!!
While I was looking for cars and parts, Don discovered something else altogether...
A hard core animal lover, Don had to rescue this sick goose. He later transported it to a rescue center near Coombs; hopefully it survived.
Dad revealed his favourite car dumping site to me today. Another trip to the woods beckons! Maybe we will get lucky and find some VW's this time...
